CBS 2 ^ | June 9, 2011 | Lou Young

Conservation Experts: This Size Cat Hasn't Been Seen Here In 100 Years. There has been a wild animal alert issued in the northern suburbs. A mountain lion, yes, a mountain lion, is on the loose.

...

We’re not looking for your Aunt Mildred’s kitty here, either. This is a big cat, a 160-pound predator that hunts and eats things.

...

Ironically the Eastern mountain lion was officially declared extinct only a few months ago — in March.

Yes, but does it like having “I Can’t Give You Nothing But Love, Baby” sung to it?

Wearing bells invites hungry bears ( or wolf packs or lions or...) to find an easy meal.

Like ringing the dinner bell—do not believe the liberal line that bells will drive bears away.

The bells and pepper spray don't seem to help much with bears, don't know about cougars. ;-)

Bear warning

That is the difference between Griz scat and Black Bear scat.

“do not believe the liberal line that bells will drive bears away.”

You don’t have to worry on that score! .357 magnum... absolute minimum. Preferably a long gun!

Was it not in Greenwich where the lady was attacked by the Chimpanzee pet ?

Don't recall.

We always encounter bears when on an eleven-day backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in far northern New Mexico.

In 2002, my crew experienced two encounters with mountain lions.

I've been charged by a bison, met a bear on a curving mountain path where there was no down (except a cliff) and no up (except straight up a cliff), waited forever for the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake that I didn't see at first to leave the trail, paddled a canoe while a seven- or eight-foot alligator swam alongside to examine me - but nothing's quite like being stalked for two miles by a mountain lion at night, or going out to hang the 'oops' bag (stuff that should have been in the bear bag) at night and finding a large mountain lion calmly standing under your bear bag, just staring at you.

Beautiful creatures. Scared the living daylights out of me.

They’re called ghost cats for several reasons.
If you actually DO see one it is because said kitty doesn’t give a hoot about your presence.
They are very good at not being seen or heard.

Bears frequently view humans as a threat and will get out of the way if they have enough advance warning of your presence, hence the bells.

Hostile mountain lion encounters with humans tend to happen because the lion views humans as lunch. Bells won't help with that.

Something similar happened in that part of Connecticut in the late 1930s, but that involved a leopard. Saw a documentary about it once, entitled Bringing Up Baby.
