Agreed. My point was simply that the FED GOVT has access to all financial records on decent, law abiding citizens & charities - but no oversight on law breakers.

The application I made was for a potiion which was ALREADY filled before ANY interviews took place, and UW was going through the motions.
No one was going to get that job but her and no exact salary was described or presented.
I wanted to work close to home in my own community. Didn’t happen.
I have donated to Salvation Army, disabled veterans groups, Purple Heart, AMVETS. I do not like to see my contributions go to illegal aliens or overpaid CEOs such a Caryl Stern.
It stinks, but it happens all the time, in all kinds of orgs.
My grandfather always recalled stories from WWII, on the front line, that the Red Cross would come through and offer hot coffee and pastries to the troops - FOR A PRICE! They charged the GIs for hot coffee and a doughnut. Since they were stationed on the front line, most had no funds with which to buy a cup of hot coffee. He cursed the Red Cross his entire life. They will never see a nickel from me.
Okay... I’m going to be the ultimate Scrooge. Do Toys For Tots give the toys to illegals? I know, I know... it is all about the children but I’m just tired of giving money, toys, clothes etc... so someone can have an easy life here illegally. To each his own.

The info is not ‘urban legend’, but it may be out of date as of October 2010. Nevertheless, it’s always smart to stay informed on charities vs. scam artists.
The Red Cross was asked by the army to charge for its services because Australian and English soldiers were charged for using the facilities and it was thought to be unfair that Americans would get it for free. It was not the Red Cross’ decision.
I volunteer for the Red Cross and the head of my county’s agency carries a copy of Eisenhower’s letter explaining that it was the army’s request.

after what the red cross did on 9/11....never again! and my ex mil worked for the salvation army. got huge salary, company car, etc.. she would sit at a family picnic and excmail “i wonder that the poor people are doing” kinda marie antoinette attitude.
They're a Marine Corps charity. I can't see the Marines checking for Green Cards at the door of a Christmas party.
I figure that if 98 cents out of every dollar goes directly to presents for the kids, and that the Marines oversee distributions, then the disbursement is pretty well husbanded.

I checked their sight and was surprised to see special attention to Navajos. I sent an email asking if donations can be sent (either with toys or money) to specific areas such as the Indian Reservations. I would support that fully.
A WWII USMC Veteran I know was on a ship in the Pacific headed to war when the Japanese surrendered. They had to go in to some of the islands and “do clean up”.
He told me that when the ship arrived back home, the Red Cross was there selling coffee and donuts for a nickle. They had to walk right past them when they left the ship. Their Commander told them they *had* to buy it, they had *no* choice, they could not say no. This was on US soil. He has not given one cent to the Red Cross since.
I give via my taxes.
I don't vet my National Charities as closely as you do. I like the Salvation Army because they just show up and help - no questions asked. I've eaten a lot of their coffee and donuts at various disasters.
I like the USO because every vet that I've spoken to about them, spoke highly of them. Heck, my grandfather would fondly reminisce about seeing Bob Hope in a bombed out airplane hanger in Regensburg, even 60 years later. :-)
And, I like Toys for Tots because they have extremely minimal overhead, and because, frankly, it's fun to play Santa Claus.

It has been a pecadillo of mine for a long time that these orgs pay their “CEOs” an ungodly amt of money. I found out abt the Amer Red Cross top pay when Liddy Dole was head...and if her’s was so bloody high, imagine the pay of those directly below...
Would love to see the stats on how much of the dough gets to those who need it...
My uncle had the same types of stories from WW 2 and the Red Cross...I never gave them a dime.
