Romantic interlude ping.
Wow. Surprisingly intact. How do we know it was a Roman soldier and not an honor killing because she was seen talking to a man she wasn’t related to?
"She was killed by a Roman sword stabbing her in the back of the head," said Dr Paul Wilkinson, director of the excavation.
Nothing says romance like a sword to the back of the head. :-)
Other than that, what did the Romans ever do for us?
>Many people have a romantic view of the Roman invasion, Dr Wilkinson said.<
That’s not what I get from watching The Eagle’ and Centurion’. Could be me. Then again, at least the diggers didn’t come to the conclusion that the girl was gay.

Do I smell political agenda?
Have the police been notified?
The Romans would kill all girls by stabbing them in the back of the head if they were witches.
There is no statute of limitations on murder!
All they can tell is that she was killed by a blade whose point produces a hole similar to what would be produced by the type of blade used by Roman soldiers. Were Roman soldiers the only people who had swords in those days?
The UK will formally ask Italy for an apology and reparations later today.
The Romans were very high-handed in their treatment of the early Brits and 17 years after this murder there was a fearsome revolt that almost wiped out the Romans there.
Sounds like an execution. How on earth do you tell the difference between a wound from a Roman sword and a wound from a British sword—or even a captured Roman sword?
Sure, the Romans were ruthless. But there is only so much you can deduce from such very slim evidence.
Sounds like it was written by someone who flunked Latin in school. Oh, that’s right, the Labour government has pretty much abolished Latin from the curriculum.
REALLY? All by the excavation of ONE grave in Britain. Amazing.
When swords were outlawed only Romans had swords.
Since the Roman soldiers aren’t here to defend themselves, let me be the first to say: this is obviously a case of suicide, or possibly resisting arrest!
“She was killed by a Roman sword stabbing her in the back of the head,”
It could have been a Roman doctor practicing his late-term abortion skills.
The article title is written as if it was a current event.
Maybe I should add that although the Roman armies were ruthless, they brought with them the Pax Romana.
That sounds ironic, but it’s not. The areas they conquered, even Greece, were filled with tribal warfare—people constantly killing and looting each other. That was certainly true in Britain.
After the Roman conquest, the barbarians were forced to find other things to do, for the most part. The Greeks were not allowed to raid each others’ cities, the British were not allowed to burn down farms and steal cattle, and so forth.
This article reads like a 3rd grade essay in political correctness. (Like almost all news articles these days.)
