ATLANTA -- Two Delta Airlines employees were attacked on a MARTA train
MARTA police said they were investigating the incident. A witness said he watched the violent attack unfold Sunday.
"We were intimidated. Everyone was terrified. People were trying to run, but there was nowhere to run," the man, who requested anonymity, told Channel 2's Erica Byfield.
Around midnight, a MARTA train pulled up to the Garnett Station in Downtown Atlanta, authorities said. The witness said up to 30 people boarded the southbound train.
"Once the doors opened, it was like a bum rush of people," he told Byfield. "The next thing you know, they started just beating him. There was blood everywhere. People were hollering and screaming," he said.
A MARTA police report identified two victims as Delta Airlines employees. The report said one victim had a soda can smashed in his face and his wallet stolen, while the other was punched repeatedly in his face.
The witness said the attackers were teens chanting "B. F. P. L."
"I don't know if that's a gang," the witness said.
By the time the train made it to West End stop, some riders were desperate to get off, but the car doors would not open, the witness said.
"So basically we were just trapped," he said.

The states seem to be coming along on reciprocity, but for some reason Virginia and Georgia have a hang-up. Don’t know why.
And I agree that some of Atlanta’s suburbs are quite nice. A BIL of mine used to live in one.
It’s just that I don’t know my way around enough to pick the right place to stop. And given Atlanta’s reputation one had better be darn sure of where he stops, y’know.
It has been my experience with several-on-one fights that decisively putting one down and out really chills out the rest.
Pick one, incapcitate one. Move on. Repeat. Not too many teens are gonna be there by the time you have a few punks twitching or still at your feet.
I seriously doubt more than one shot would ever be needed, for the same reason. Pick the ringleader and cap 'em. The rest will flee like the cockroaches they are.
Ping me, or post in the GA sub-forum on FR, if you need some direction. Coming down 85, you’re pretty good until you get well inside the Perimeter.
Ping. There are some Philly comments in the thread too, trifona.
That sort of gives me the chills. The Perimeter. Reminds me of the old movies, Escape From New York or Mad Max.
What a state of affairs - taxpayers are paying for city services for vast areas of the city they dare not enter.
That’s one of the good things about Atlanta. The City of Atlanta proper is only on the order of 10-15% of the metro area population, depending on where you stop with “metro area”. The City itself is relatively small. It isn’t even all of the area inside the Perimeter.
Many thanks. I copied out this post and printed it for my travel records.
Yes, I come down on I-85 then head west on I-20.
It makes a difference if you come through during the day or at night. I wouldn't go down there at night on a bet, but I regularly drive the Connector and I-20 during the day. I even get off the highway in the West End when I need to stop by the bank. Of course, I know exactly where to go and where not to go.
Coming down I-85, you are pretty much o.k. anywhere down to the Connector (where I-85 merges with I-75 for the trip through town). Once you pass 17th-14th St. exit on the Connector you should not get off or stop your car -- it's dicey in that area, some parts are o.k. but others (east of the Connector) are quite dangerous and you don't want to go there. Once you pass the Grady curve and head west on I-20, you are in a truly rotten part of town and you should drive straight ahead without stopping until you get past Six Flags Road. The jail is immediately on your right as you turn onto I-20, it is nothing but trash and thugs all the way out to Fulton County Airport. Parts of the West End are o.k. but they're islands in a sea of crud.
Going around the Perimeter won't help you because the whole west side below the river is thug territory. Back when MLK was shot, the rioters were heading for the river and the Atlanta police told the Cobb police they couldn't stop them. Certain military veterans of my acquaintance set up a defensive perimeter on the west end of the bridge. They tossed a couple of flares out in the travel lanes and nobody tried to cross . . . which was a good thing because there was some significant (elderly, but significant) firepower focused on the area.
Nice post, and OldPossum, I concur wholeheartedly with all that, except I think AnAmericanMother meant *west* of the Connector along the segment you are traveling is dicey. Really anything beyond GA Tech, Tech is OK (the bad elements from further West sometimes intrude).
And AnAmericanMother, we really need to have lunch some time, or meet at a FR get together. You seem to have some good stories of historical interest to political junkies. In that anecdote, I’m thinking a bunch of aging WWII vets w/ Garands and ‘03 Springfields. Not a group to trifle with.
Wow, I thank you for the exceptionally detailed info on the dos and donts of driving through Atlanta. I printed it out and put ir in my travel file for when I next go through there (this autumn).
What a shame Atlanta has transformed itself into. I can remember back in the early 60s when I was in college over in Alabama and Atlanta was a short drive away. We college kids could go into downtown Atlanta during the day and be dazzled by the homegrown beauties as they came out of their offices for lunch. It seemed that some of the most beautiful women in the world inhabited that city then.
Is it still the same or is it now Holder’s people? If the latter, well, I wouldn’t be interested.
Not to mention up north, near me it’s as far away from the chaos that is the ATL and still be in the metro area. Most large cities are this was all over the country, Atlanta isn’t any different. Thankfully GA gun laws are friendly for law-abiding citizens interested in protecting one’s self.
To affirm FP’s comment, one with a brain knows when and where to go to avoid potential problems. MARTA past 8pm is risky, plan accordingly.
There was a reason Sherman burned that city to the ground once. Atlanta sucks.
I knew there was a bill to expand carry. I just couldn't remember ever hearing if it made it into law.
Just dont let the cops see you carrying.
I take it then you are NOT one of the freepers who argue that "the police are on our side?"
Good to know. I didn't remember hearing that the bill to expand carry passed.
Why is it that the great majority of the references to pistols I see refer to the .45 or 9mm? I have a .40 cal Springfield XD/SD and I am COMPLETELY satisfied with it. Are people here more or less averse to the .40 caliber handguns or something?
“And cowed people just sat there and watched. This would not happen in Texas. Someone with a gun would be there, and thats why we love living here.”
And did you notice the comment at the end, that “people should not have to witness such a thing”, or something like that? What about the poor victims?
That is my understanding as well. Can someone cite law? Remember how the city howled at that one? and of course the only reason was that their constituency would be the ones shot and killed pulling this kind of crap.
Some are, some are not.
The prior idiot mayor of Atlanta was active in prosecuting lawful behavior. The new mayor is more sensible, and may not be telling cops to oppress the law abiding. Then again, there is a presumable ingrained hostility in that force.
Some cops are on our side, and some are not. My local sheriff and his minions are very supportive and protective (hey, he’ll even sign NFA forms while you wait). Atlanta police, not so much. Sometimes you can tell, and sometimes you can’t.
Problem is, these folks were coming from Hartsfield (ATL). Airports are definitely “self-defense free” zones. I doubt they could bring a sidearm to the airport...
