Man carrying umbrella shuts-down Burlington (MA) Mall after patrons scream "Gunman!"
Various Boston stations | 4/19/11

The Burlington, MA, Mall was locked-down this morning after a patron screamed that there was a man carrying a rifle in the mall. Approximately 300 police and an undetermined number of local fire departments were dispatched to deal with the emergency. It was just announced that there was no gunman; just a shopper with an umbrella.

Even for the vicious, Liberal, anti-gunners in MA, this may be a record. Perhaps someone can sum-up the total $ cost in emergency services and lost business.

My all time favorite was the semi-automatic machine gun used in a NYT article to describe the Barrett that was supposedly at WACO.

Holy umbrella-gun, it's the Penguin. Call Batman to lock down the mall.

This incident reminds me of the contrast between a student shooting up a cafeteria here in Springfield Oregon and the Virginia Tech shooting. At Virginia Tech when a student noticed the shooter was reloading, the response was to tell everyone they had a chance to run away. In Springfield Oregon one student jumped the shooter the moment he saw the slide lock back. Unlike Eugene, which is a university town just across I-5 , Springfield is still “backward” enough to have real people. Evidently there are none in MA.

Maybe John Steed would be alright in MA. A concealed sword may still be legal. Then again...

Nope, concealed sword will still get you locked up.

Burlington, which is north of Boston, is in the middle of the route between Boston and Southern NH (mostly the Nashua area.) It is a place when the snooty from SNH come down to buy stuff, and the folks from the suburbs go shopping. Personally, the only thing in Burlington that has any appeal is the Lahey Clinic which helps people.

The only firearms most of these people see are on TV.

I bet it was one of those “sawed off” umbrellas. The kind that can be concealed in a coat pocket.

That’s better than someone thinking it’s an umbrella when it’s actually a rifle.

Funny...about a month ago I saw a couple of younger guys walking into the Target in Concord, NH and one of them had what appeared to be an actual samurai sword - not the umbrella with the fancy handle - slung across his back in a similar fashion. Not sure why they were doing it, but no panic ensued.

Somewhere on one of the NH liberty-oriented forums, maybe the Free State Project, there are pictures of a guy in a kilt walking around with a sidearm on the belt, samurai sword, and an AR-15 across his back. He was doing it to prove a point. Again...no panic in the Granite State.

Don't worry, it won't hurt anyone.

Imagine the turnout if he’d also been smoking, with a Happy Meal in his pocket.

How appropriate that Burlington Mall is where Paul Blart Mall Cop was filmed! I thought it was South Jersey Mall.

Why didn't they just shoot him? If a customer in a store thinks someone has a gun, and calls the cops, that should be enough to take him down on the spot.
