8 Grocery Store Products that are Better than Homemade, really
Yahoo/Bon Appetit ^ | 4/17/11 | n/a

Usually, the imitation, short-cut, version just doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Consider: Spray tans. Toupees. Press-On Nails. But when it comes to food, most of us don’t have the time to make everything from scratch. So over the years I’ve scoured grocery store shelves for pre-made foods that taste as good as homemade (almost). There are not many. But when I do find a winner, I am instantly hooked. And, while it would probably be more prudent for my culinary street cred to keep my finds to myself, these products are so good, I can't help but overshare.

Do these store-bought foods give the made-from-scratch versions a run for their money? You bet your clip-in hair extensions...

My wife trolls for the 'high sugar' ones (Sun Sugar, Sungold, Yellow Brandywine, and so forth) to 'sweeten' the pot. Of course, it is all a matter of taste...so you have to experiment a bit. Using yellow or orange tomatoes isn't going to leave you with a rich red sauce, either...but that heirloom flavor..?

Oh, yeah...

I use fresh SQUEEZED Orange juice and orange zest in my sauce. Sour orange and blood orange for the juice. Not too much, but it does make it nice.

I only allow my husband to make his fried chicken in the summer. He does it on the grill and we coat the chicken on the deck.

“For non-stick, I’ve had the best luck with Farberware Millenium pans.”

Funny you should mention non-stick! The ones we have now, which are the only good ones we’ve ever had are Belguique (sp?!?!?) They really are excellent, the larger pan has actually survived hubby cooking burgers in it

I do make chicken on the grill, and it is edible. At least my wife says so. My theory to making anything on the grill is pretty direct: throw it on the grill and char the heck out of it.

Italian is a race? Wow, what a revelation!

And I have a son who is...half Italian!

Grow a thicker skin, if you can.
