I have a friend willing to GIVE me a free laptop but wants assurances it will be thouroughly wiped 1st.

since I have no deniro , is there an easy , free , portable way I can take something to his locale to do this there and in person so he can see that it's done?

(not a computer guru so a step by step printable guide would be best)

thanks in advance to all . my previous FRiends have been quite helpful in computer matters.

Is Newegg a pretty good place to buy?

Yes, great place.

Other places include tigerdirect.com and Amazon.com ...

For those that like to find great deals... keep an eye on slickdeals.net where people like to share where they got great deals at.

Depends what you are hiding, and who you are hiding it from. For 99 percent of the people out there, a reformat is sufficient. Do it twice if need be. For military grade info, you want special programs that rewrit the 0’s and 1’s 8 or more times. Even then, there are hints of computers thatcan recover the data. Supercomputers. I doubt our fRiend has to worry about that,or that his reformatted drive canbe recovered. Whenhe is done with the computer,he can always pull the hd.

Realistically, unless you think that somebody is willing to spend thousands of dollars to retrieve your data, any of several freeware overwrite-and-erase programs mentioned on this thread will do the trick.
