Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 13 2011 - vestige
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/13/2011

Posted on 04/13/2011 6:19:41 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

vestige \VESS-tij\ noun

a mark or visible sign left by something that existed before; also: a minute remaining amount

Example sentence:

Viaducts, walls, and ancient baths remain as vestiges of the Roman occupation of Britain.

Extra example: "Outside her home flies a large American flag, but inside there are vestiges of her native France, with paintings all round of the City of Lights and its grand boulevards and striking architecture." -- From an article in the Gloucester Daily Times (Massachusetts), March 3, 2011

Did you know?
"Vestige" is derived via Middle French from the Latin noun "vestigium," meaning "footstep, footprint, or track." Like "trace" and "track," "vestige" can refer to a perceptible sign made by something that has now passed. Of the three words, "vestige" is the most likely to apply to a tangible reminder, such as a fragment or remnant of what is past and gone. "Trace," on the other hand, may suggest any line, mark, or discernible effect ("the snowfield is pockmarked with the traces of caribou"). "Track" implies a continuous line that can be followed ("the fossilized tracks of dinosaurs").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yes.

Here’s the short version.

Ryan is a Modern Day Jenjhis Khan.

Tax the Rich.

Cut more Defense.

Anyone that disagrees is the demagogue, not me.

I thought so, too, but I guess Obama’s not ready for prime time.

Is Glenn off all week?

My priest summed it up like this..........the essence of our faith is the Apostle’s Creed.........if we believe that we can be confirmed into the Catholic Church.........we are NOT required to pray the Rosary, we are not required to believe in Marian apparitions, we DO have to believe in Jesus. He is still the center of our faith, not Mary. Mary’s assumption is not in the creed....I love Mary, but it’s my choice....not the church ordering me to. One poster INSISTED we are required to do so, then he posted an absurd protestant website as proof. You should have seen the private FRmail I got tracking down that source. I wasted a lot of time over there.

Guess I am getting cranky, I thought I was all cured of back problems, then I picked up one of the twins and more problems. Two steps forward, one back. The NS today ticked me off........Mohammad something and the guy was so happy he annoyed the living heck out of me grinning..couldn’t understand him so I sat there repeating back what I thought he was saying and he would launch into another rapid answer........egads, is it too much to ask to get a doctor who doesn’t laugh when I ask a serious question, who is able to communicate effectively with me?

Like I said, Mary’s Assumption and Her Immaculate Conception (but not apparitions) are dogma. A Catholic is to assert the truth of these dogmas.

Of course, one should believe voluntarily and not under duress. But the Church ascribes dogmatic status to certain things in order that we may know the truth.

If you are just going by the Apostle’s Creed, then you could disbelieve in the Real Presence in the Eucharist. It’s not mentioned there, right?

Let me be blunt.

Who gives a fu*k?

Really...the leftist media will do everything they can to prop up the Affirmative Action President.

The only question that really remains, is.....do our guys have what it takes to call a spade a spade?

Someone who has extirpated almost every trace of a Southern accent might refer to it as vestige, y'all.

In going through my e-mail, I came across this:

Sometimes you are encouraged about our country’s future when you see something like this.

There is an annual contest at Texas A&M University calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term.

This year’s term was:

“Political Correctness.”

The winner wrote:

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

(This guy nailed it!)

Glenn is on the radio and doing his comedy tour. He’ll be back on tv, next week. No permanent replacement has been named yet.

Are you suggesting that there is a vestige of a drawl in my accent?

It doesn't show at all in the way you type.

Sorry, been sick. Sinus infection...finally on an antibiotic. Fam doc lectured me on the surgery. Said the problem was not going to go away. (sigh)

The Assumption, was first made dogma around 1950...hardly an essential part of our faith like the real presence in the Eucharist. That goes back to the Last Supper. There is a vast difference...but alas, I am not up to debating it.

How are YOU feeling today? I am sick of going from one thing to the next. I want to have a couple of good days. Sleep would be a nice start.
