Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 13 2011 - vestige
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/13/2011

Posted on 04/13/2011 6:19:41 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

vestige \VESS-tij\ noun

a mark or visible sign left by something that existed before; also: a minute remaining amount

Example sentence:

Viaducts, walls, and ancient baths remain as vestiges of the Roman occupation of Britain.

Extra example: "Outside her home flies a large American flag, but inside there are vestiges of her native France, with paintings all round of the City of Lights and its grand boulevards and striking architecture." -- From an article in the Gloucester Daily Times (Massachusetts), March 3, 2011

Did you know?
"Vestige" is derived via Middle French from the Latin noun "vestigium," meaning "footstep, footprint, or track." Like "trace" and "track," "vestige" can refer to a perceptible sign made by something that has now passed. Of the three words, "vestige" is the most likely to apply to a tangible reminder, such as a fragment or remnant of what is past and gone. "Trace," on the other hand, may suggest any line, mark, or discernible effect ("the snowfield is pockmarked with the traces of caribou"). "Track" implies a continuous line that can be followed ("the fossilized tracks of dinosaurs").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

some idiot was saying that Catholics are required to believe in Mary....her apparitions, praying to her, her assumption into Heaven. then he sited as his source a protestant site that was presenting this as fact.

good grief.

@crossurfingrs is wrong.

The computer will give you any answer I tell it to.

Which explains the disparity between TI-85, and TI-86.

That’s all kinds of apples and oranges. Some Marian apparitions have been found to be worthy of belief, but not mandatory. The Assumption is dogma.

One does not need to pray private prayers to Mary or any saint, but they should not believe it is forbidden or evil, either.

Publicly, we do petition Mary and the other saints during Mass and other liturgies. Any Baptism I’ve seen has a litany of the saints. You can’t do the confeitor without asking Mary and all the saints to pray for us.

Democrats argue...(you're gonna love this) "state officials are not fully qualified to determine the validity of a candidate's documents.

So who is giving out Driving privlege, Marriage documents, and Business License?

OK, so you’re not disagreeing with 288 as the answer, but with the idea that “computers” will automatically give the right answer?

They have a point. Many are giving driver’s licenses to illegal aliens.

Correct.

The answer is 288. There is no other way.

In the grand scheme of life HOW THE HELL IS THAT EQUATION RELEVANT and why are myriad people wasting time arguing about it as if it MATTERED?

That is a very interesting sociological question.

As Dave pointed out...we even now have the TShirt.

Much like Conservatives being right about Government, the 2fers don’t like to acknowledge their obvious failures at basic math, like the dimmocrats holding on to their failed Communist visions.

Ha! i posted the bit about engaging anti-Papists before i got to the posts about marian apparitions and the insanity that is the religion forum. Just goes to show that if one wants to imagine the most contentious thing possible, one immediately thinks of the FR religion forum.

math is of so little consequence to me, i can’t muster up a good give a dang either way. i think people who can argue in any heated way about it must be deranged.

I’ve been perusing a 132 page thread on some other site I followed links to on the subject. The people with the wrong answer can give all manner of explanations and display all manner of ill education.

But I’m just browsing there.

The FR thread is still going from yesterday and I’m participating there.

I would be concerned but not necessarily frightened. If there is a disc pressing on the nerve and it hasn’t responded to conservative treatment surgery is certainly a reasonable approach.

I have referred two friends this year for surgery on their spines for this type of problem and both had excellent results. I realize that’s not a large series but over the years there have been quite a few others including my father, ex-wife and uncle.
