Word For The Day, Wednesday, April 13 2011 - vestige
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 04/13/2011

Posted on 04/13/2011 6:19:41 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

vestige \VESS-tij\ noun

a mark or visible sign left by something that existed before; also: a minute remaining amount

Example sentence:

Viaducts, walls, and ancient baths remain as vestiges of the Roman occupation of Britain.

Extra example: "Outside her home flies a large American flag, but inside there are vestiges of her native France, with paintings all round of the City of Lights and its grand boulevards and striking architecture." -- From an article in the Gloucester Daily Times (Massachusetts), March 3, 2011

Did you know?
"Vestige" is derived via Middle French from the Latin noun "vestigium," meaning "footstep, footprint, or track." Like "trace" and "track," "vestige" can refer to a perceptible sign made by something that has now passed. Of the three words, "vestige" is the most likely to apply to a tangible reminder, such as a fragment or remnant of what is past and gone. "Trace," on the other hand, may suggest any line, mark, or discernible effect ("the snowfield is pockmarked with the traces of caribou"). "Track" implies a continuous line that can be followed ("the fossilized tracks of dinosaurs").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

(oh, and when I read quickly the exhortation for no pushing at the door, and it’s hump day...my eyes switched the words, and for a second I thought it said “no humping at the door”. Ouch.

xsex takes note.

I’m holding my breath and hoping that the tax consultants are filing the extension like they are supposed to. (It is a big freaking mess with taxes in two countries.) This stresses me out, as I am normally the family tax preparer and I know it gets done. This time? Like everything, I’m holding my breath and hoping for the best.

I feel marginally better. I have been home bc i just am not sleeping at night for coughing. If i had something pressing to get done, i could probably handle it, but since i don’t, am just taking the opportunity to try to rest during the day. How about you, what’s your prognosis?

I’m not sure what has happened on FR lately, but yesterday there was a thread about Michelle and Jill Biden pushing something on the American public and Jill was listed as Dr. Biden..... I am shocked by how many freepers questioned why Jill was referred to as Dr...... The vestiges of intelligence on that thread are a bit shocking and don’t make us look very smart.

She’s certainly entitled to the title, but i do recall the pettiness and the BOXEResque way in which she demanded to be called that. Basically, i have a problem with calling someone dr who isn’t an MD, but that’s my issue with questioning the worth of a PhD, and not any reflection their actual entitlement to be called that.

Oh I know, and the article clearly says she demands to be called Dr. Biden - but freepers writing jokes about it and acting like they had no idea she had a PhD - come on, where have they been hiding? A big deal was made about it during the campaign even. Funny though, the left doesn’t make fun of the fact that she’s at a couple of junior colleges but made fun of Sarah Palin being at a few midwestern schools that were NOT Harvard.

No remarks about vestige virgins, oh wait, that vestal - nevermind. Dancing with the Stars costumes leave little to the imagination, requiring the question - is this a vestige of clothing?

I’ve been feeling pretty good the past two days. My white blood count is still high and rising (as of last Friday). I’m supposed to see an infectious disease specialist next week.

The last vestige of a once proud country
fought for, and protected, by generations of heroes,
whose children lost their liberty, freedom and access to justice
in one generation to a cunning, deceitful Communist impostor
himself with not even a vestige of documentation.
