That's part of the problem, I suspect. The judges are sitting right in front of the performers. The critiques might be more valid if a judge was watching on TV, another judge maybe in the back of the theater, and another one somewhere just listening without seeing the act.
That might be why Simon was such a good judge. He in many cases seemed to be able to interpolate how a performance would translate to those situations.
