10. Titanic: If youre a teenage girl, I understand Leo is soooo dreamy (retch). But if not, you have no excuse. Utterly ludicrous interpretation of a tragic event. Exploitative in the extreme. Yes, during the sinking of the Titanic, Im sure that people went hunting each other with pistols. The dialogue is some of the worst ever penned. And she throws the diamond into the sea at the end? My God, old woman, there are millions starving and you throw a priceless jewel into the ocean? Selfish hag.
9. Some Like It Hot: Not a terrible movie, just not a great one. Still unsure why this is considered one of the great comedies of all time. I love Billy Wilder, but this isnt his best comedy, or even among his top ten movies (see The Apartment, The Fortune Cookie, Stalag 17, the underrated Ace in the Hole, Witness for the Prosecution, Ball of Fire, Sabrina, Love in the Afternoon, Sunset Blvd. and Ninotchka all rank above it). And what the hell does the last line even mean?
8. Chinatown: A good movie, but is it really the best script of all time?
7. 2001: A Space Odyssey: 45 minutes of greatness, almost two hours of poop, including half an hour of monkeys hitting each other with sticks. Oh yeah, and theres a monolith.
6. The Usual Suspects: When I finished this movie, I wanted to punch somebody. Heres the deal with twist endings: you have to give the audience clues, and the twist must not invalidate the entire movie. The Usual Suspects broke both these rules. First, the clues were not available the entire movie only when they show you the board, the mug, etc. do you realize hes been making up the story. Thats called cheating.

I think the first 45 minutes are pretty good. After that, it sort of goes off the rails.
Two things:
"And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother"
Child "Grandpa were you a hero in the war?"
Richard Winters "No, but I knew a few." Says it all.
Roy Batty (the Rutger Hauer character) and his colleagues were not androids or cyborgs or clones, but were human-engineered biological entities, ‘grown’ from scratch, although some parts were subcontracted (like to the eye-guy). They were also ‘grown’ with an internal self-destruct clock. They came back to Earth, risking automatic execution if caught, in the hope of finding a solution to stopping that clock. (Obviously the movie made an impression!)
Loved Christopher Walken in Mousehunt too!
Right, Christopher Walken! I had forgotten about him in that movie. That’s good stuff.
********************************
It's weird. I'm guessing that the use of drugs was a factor in the popularity of that movie, because nothing else explains its success.
Tracy was in "The Mountain" but not Katherine Hepburn. It was Robert Wagner as Tracy's shallow, worthless younger brother. Great flick. And it's just now becoming available on DVD.
***..in the hope of finding a solution to stopping that clock. ***
“Time to die.”
The director’s cut without the horrible voiceover is better.
(The fact that this was the first date with my soon-to-be wife may cloud my judgment, though....)
My first date with my now wife was to see WILLARD back in 1971.
My second date we ended the evening at her parent’s house and on TV came one of my old favorites from 1956! Danny Kay in THE COURT JESTER.
That movie has personal meaning to me as I saw it at the ALLEN theater in Farmington, NM backin 1956, the last year I was happy till I met my wife.
Does anybody know why young people won’t watch black and white movies? They seem to have a built in bias which prevents them from watching even the first 5 minutes . . . .
I tried to impart this to my children, but I really failed. No silents. No black and white. No foreign. And most of my movies are "too slow".
Actually, the two most common complaints I get is that the movie either has "too many explosions" or else it "moves too slow; nothing happens". There just seems to be a very narrow band of what makes a movie "acceptable" to a lot of folks.
For actual insight into conservative values in film, Libertas Film Magazine is a good place to visit.
Dolly, this is a fun thread. Don’t have time to read it now, but have to add Fargo to the overrated list.
Finally saw it.
Critics seem to be in awe of the Coen Brothers and fail to notice how bad their movies are. They used to be that way about Woody Allen.
Thanks for the post. I used to follow Apuzzo and Murty's old Libertas film site back when John Nolte (now EIC for Big Hollywood) used to blog there. But definitely gonna check them out now. I can't believe they've been relauched since May of last year.
I don’t care for his manic standup routines, but Robin Williams is a great actor. Have you seen ‘One Hour Photo’ and ‘Bicentennial Man’? If not, try to catch these.
I thought ‘The Bird Cage’ was hilarious. LOL
***.. but Robin Williams is a great actor.***
POPEYE was a terrible movie! When I saw it the first thing I noticed was the script was by Jules Phiffer.
Crap! I thought, This won’t be worth a watching!
I was right. Even my worthless brother-in-law (If you know him he probably owes you money) didn’t like it, and that is saying something!
Please add me to the cinema ping list.
>>They used to be that way about Woody Allen.
They still are in some ways. “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is one of my all-time “When can I ever get that time back?” movies.
Though Penelope was quite impressive as the crazed artist. All the others...blech.
For anyone who wants to see Night to Remember its on utube
Much better than the latest version I thought
That romance is shown a coupla times between Jack and Rose, but its not the whole Titanic story as in the new one
Never saw the one with Barbra Stanwick tho
Fargo, went to see it in the theater but the couple in front of us had some bratty kids that ruined it for us
