TV Land responds to Facebook users' demand for more retro shows

It doesn’t take much sleuthing on TV Land’s Facebook page to discover some of the channel’s viewers are downright peeved. Their demands? More classic programming and fewer new shows. “Bring back the classics! Archie Bunker rules!” declares one viewer. “With all these comments, can’t you guys take the hint! You need to revamp the channel,” censures another. One says: “I’d rather watch the Cavs’ losing streak than Hot in Cleveland.”

TV Land’s first original scripted sitcom, Hot in Cleveland (which has just been renewed for a third season), nabbed SAG recognition in January with a nomination for the cast and a win for Betty White, along with the highest ratings in the network’s 15-year history. Capitalizing on their new hit, TV Land debuted their second original comedy, Retired at 35, earlier this year.

But many of TV Land’s Facebook fans are calling for a programming re-haul, and their show requests run the gamut: Get Smart, I Love Lucy, Mork and Mindy, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, That Girl, Barney Miller, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Rockford Files, The Love Boat, The Monkees, Hazel, Rhoda, Flipper, and Soap all have fans eager to see their old favorite shows back on air.

But those fans shouldn’t hold their breath. “As time progresses and a network matures, there are still only 24 hours in a day,” Jaci Cohen, Executive Vice President of TV Land’s programming, tells EW. “We’re never able to give everybody what they want, and that’s why shows come and go on our schedule.”

What’s Syfy? Oh, you mean the channel that shows wrestling. Syfy does not show much sci-fi, History Channel does not show much actual history (alien conspiracy theories about history do not count), TVLand does not show much classic tv, and MTV does not show many music videos. I hate network decay since it’s often the shows that I watch that get bumped to make way for more crap.

TV pretty much turned to trash and vulgarity in the 1970’s, it seems.

That's so true.

Not always.
In the mid-1990s, I worked the second shift (3pm - 11pm).
I’d watch CLASSIC scifi all afternoon long.
Stuff from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

The, they started making their own shit and that’s exactly what it is.

Can not help you with the TV would be nice. I am watching Wagon Train right now 1957 lol.
Also if you like old movies I mean old movies try the internet archive. The layout can be frustrating to find things but after you get used to it its ok. Here is the movie page.

Also here for SCIFI and Horror.

It seems the biggest trend in TV is people tuning to watch ordinary people doing mundane jobs - Pawn Stars, Operation Repo, Dirty Jobs, American Chopper. It’s a trend I’ve never understood. The only show like this that seems slightly interesting is Ice Road Truckers, partly because of the coolness factor of driving trucks on ice, and partly because of Lisa.

Yep. HinC is MILDLY amusing, & the old ladies are nice looking. Betty W is like the restored 57 Chevy that impresses everybody, yet nobody really wants one. Rat35 is no better.

I think the problem is a lack of good writers. The trade must be dominated by oversexed, sadomasochistic queers with a sick sense of humor. The whole industry is overpaid for the crap they produce.

Network TV basically produces 2 types of shows: Sexually suggestive sitcoms & increasingly bloody crime dramas. Both are pure trash, IMO.

No wonder old reruns rate better than new shows.

As the article notes, “Hot in Cleveland” has consistently bested TVLand’s biggest ratings for ‘classic’ programming by thirty percent. That means more people watching. How are they not giving people what they want?

“The whole industry is overpaid for the crap they produce.”

People are pretty quick to decide others are “overpaid.” I’m a TV writer and I make exactly what someone is willing to pay me in the free market.

Your taxes aren’t paying my salary, so what do you care? If you want in my business, jump in, write something and produce something, and if you think you’re overpaid, give some back.

Plus you missed the point of the article: the reruns AREN’T doing better than ‘Hot in Cleveland’ on TVLand. The new show gets better ratings.

“As time progresses and a network matures, there are still only 24 hours in a day,” Jaci Cohen, Executive Vice President of TV Land’s programming, tells EW. “

The same old thing that happens at every cable channel of this sort.

Starts out one way, gets some success, decides it has to "mature" and gets as gross as the other channels, and a new channel starts up that did what the other one used to do.

See all the iterations of "family channels." They start fine, become less and less family friendly, until they finally stop identifying themselves as a family channel at all. Then a new family channel starts up and attracts all the fans of the old family channel.

We never watch TV Land anymore. It used to be reliable family-friendly tv. First, the ads started getting gross -- your kids are watching The Andy Griffith Show but the ads are horrible. Then they started getting away from classic tv altogether.

Never fear. If they don't listen to their viewers, they will lose them to a new "TV Land" like channel.

you are correct. I don’t think they can come up with a good solid plot either comedy or mystery without everyone jumping in and out of bed or if they are not doing that they are always referring to sex and...in so many disrespectful ways that are indeed not funny or humorous. But, it’s like they want to brainwash everyone with it. Talent is one thing but trash is another and yes, that’s about it on TV...total trash.
We don’t watch it. We shut it off and read. Watch one or two things but that’s it.
Yes, bring back the good solid stuff ...

I don’t know the last time Get Smart rat, I have looked and looked, and I think it would still be funny. I’d love to see it again. And what about Red Skelton’s old show? Have not seen that in reruns (if ever?) in ages. I thought that’s what TVLand was about. And I just don’t get the business of running something like The Nanny over and over. I do like The Nanny, but I’ve seen them all, and recently. It’s time for something else. Oh, and They reran Newhart on another station last year (I Tivoed it) but I haven’t seen his older show (the one with Suzanne Pleshette). That would be great to see again.

Which is why I gave up on TV for the most part years ago. I have over 5000 DVD and Netflix, so I can watch what I want when I want and seldom watch “regular” TV anymore.

Watching “Baa Baa Black Sheep” TV series now as I freep.

ScFy is a bad joke. Once it was pretty good, but that train has long since passed. The “rebranding” to SyFy from Sci Fi was to attract more female viewers along with stronger less feminine female characters. They claimed this would make them less dependent on the nerds.

Well I am just the opposite, when they were plaing the old stuff regular, I was a “regular” watcher. Now I’m not. Same with MTV, the music videos and music was why I watched, now I NEVER do and haven’t in many years.

True, but Sci Fi with all its warts was tons better than SyFy.
