NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) – A U.S. teenager has been charged with a felony, and could face a two-year prison sentence if convicted, for killing her family's pet hamster, authorities said.
Monique Smith, 19, of Brooklyn was arguing with a family member in June when she reached for the hamster, choked it and threw it outside the house, police said on Wednesday.
She was arrested following an investigation after Smith's father contacted the America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, according to the society's assistant director Joe Pentangelo.
Smith is charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

If you learn nothing else from this thread, learn this: Unless you fear for the life of yourself or those that live in your house (I’m talking humans here), NEVER get the police involved in the discipline of your children unless the officers are personal friends. You will enter a world of hurt. The evidence is rife.

At her age, and considering the senselessly cruel behavior, calling the police was an excellent idea in this case. She’ll have plenty of time to think about it.

I suspect that many on this thread are making a joke of this young woman’s odious behavior because the pet is in the rodent family. I don’t care for gerbils or hamsters either, but it is a pet . . . a member of the “family” so to speak.
I doubt the jokes would be so lavish if the pet had been a dog or cat.

Well, I certainly agree with that. The question is, in PRISON, what exactly will she think about. BTW, my band played in the prison ministry at Purdy (women’s prison). I would not want my daughter to spend a week there if she was caught slowly slicing up our dog.
S.S.S. - Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up! - Not encouraging any violence against mice; have used the Havahart traps on them. Caught one in my pantry in the Havahart. By the time I got to her (about 5 min.) she was sweating like crazy and her eyes were as big as saucers. - I took her out to the woodpile and put cheese, bread, wool, and stuff out for her. Named her Mrs. Tittlemouse, and she spent the remainder of her life in that woodpile for all I know.
