NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) – A U.S. teenager has been charged with a felony, and could face a two-year prison sentence if convicted, for killing her family's pet hamster, authorities said.

Monique Smith, 19, of Brooklyn was arguing with a family member in June when she reached for the hamster, choked it and threw it outside the house, police said on Wednesday.

She was arrested following an investigation after Smith's father contacted the America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, according to the society's assistant director Joe Pentangelo.

Smith is charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Oh, it’s you again.

You are the first person I’ve ever encountered that is PRO-animal cruelty.

>>Keying an inanimate object and squeezing a living thing to death are the same?<<

If the living thing is not human, and the goal is to hurt a human who loves the item you are damaging, yes. They are EXACTLY the same thing.

>>does this sound like a teen you want in your house?<<

There are a lot of people I wouldn’t want in my house. That doesn’t mean I think they belong in prison.

>>Good thing this sicko was caught in time, before doing violence on a human.<<

Hamsters are not necessarily gateway mammals. ;)

>>That’s true. But a felony conviction for a hamster is WAY over the top. How about a low grade misdemeanor, and 2 weeks community service at an animal shelter. Even that’s fairly severe.<<

I agree. I think a reasonable penalty would be to pay the person for the private property she damaged.

Do you think the penalty for aggravated cruelty should be based on the size of the animal killed?

I think the kind of animal has nothing to do with the mentality of person who would intentionally harm an animal just to cause emotional distress to another person. That behavior is psychotic whether the animal killed is a mouse or a horse.

I’d rather have that teen in my house than her idiot father. I’d knock that assclown out cold.

this thread requires a
supercharged /sarc tag...

It is bizarre that hamster cruelty is a punishable offense
that Obama believes having to bear a child is “punishment”
but abortion is perfectly legal

Is this world nuts or what?...

It’s important that you killed it. Dead mice cannot come back and sue you.

To be fair, I think post 5 was just sarcasm without the tag. Was one really necessary?

Hate to break it to you, but anyone alive who has passed through puberty has done that - more than once. It is what human beings do, especially at that stage.

It was the family’s choice to treat it as a pet, and as such it was equivalent to a cat or dog.

Just wondering how the ant farm and collection of 'pet' bugs I had as a kid fits into your "it was equivalent to a cat or dog" rule.

What the hell are you talking about? Are you serious? have you not read the freaks on this thread? they are not being sarcastic. If that was sarcasm, then hell yes, a sarc tag is needed. I do not believe it was sarcasm.

I suspect we have some actual PETA members here on FR. It is impossible to respond to their posts with a straight face. ;)

I agree with you. If I saw a child of mine, especially one who was 19 years old, do such a cold-blooded cruel thing I would have reported her, too.

Thee is something wrong with that young woman.
