It is handmade, nice deco brass outer with rather crude scratched-up bright tin liner (not glass that is shiny in sides... that is tinplate...)
Rough-mounted circular, clear glass "window". Lid opens by pressing down on finger catch - like a dustpan). End of the "handle" has polished flat "gem" stone set in it.
If you mean the lottery ticket, it is not a winner... remember to play again on Wednesday...
That tube shaped handle throws me. I was wondering why anyone would make a tubular handle, because such a shape would make it harder to hold on to.
Perhaps the handle was meant to be inserted into a larger tube—buy why?
Well, maybe it’s meant to hold a lock of hair?
I box of receipts for the money spent on TARP.
Pandora’s box. oops too late its open... =0 (j/k)
It’s a 19th century version of a “laser” first invented by Dr. Miguelito Loveless
A jewelry box for men (cufflinks, etc.) or women?
A really poorly design training potty?
Looks like it held a wind up music box... (just a guess)
I don’t see where you said the dimensions. It appears to be about 3” square and 3/4” tall (minus the legs). The handle looks less than an inch long and maybe 1/3” diameter. Is that about right?
That’s a bit small to be used as a handle. And why would there be a mid section to it? What is that line around the middle? Does it pull open? Is it two pieces welded together. Makes no sense.
If it were larger, I’d think you’d hold the handle and push down on the clover thing on top with your thumb to open it away from you. But it seems too small for that to be practical.
Is that a mechanism holding it open or did you put something in it to hold it open for the picture?
Is the round glass the same glass that is on the sides? If not, then it’s fairly certain that there was something else there at one time. Still, why go to all the trouble of replacing whatever it was with plain glass? The box itself doesn’t look valuable enough to go to all that trouble.
Is there any indication if there was anything attached on the inside of the box?
One messy desk.
Could be a hat...a broach...a teradactyl
Looks like you have a nice keep sake box. I see them from time to time, I have not seen one with a finger catch like that though. Its a handsome piece. nice find!
It is made of wood with tinplate walls and nonmagnifying glass inset in the wooden cover.
Is it possible that the dowel could be fitted into the deck of a ship?
Could this be a binnacle housing a mariner’s compass? Except the compass is missing.
An ancient mariner might have matching binnacle, artificial horizon and sextant matching kits.
maybe a cigar box or something a butler could use...it clearly has a handle and a lift open top...
Question: Is the handle hollow? If so, does the light pass through the gem and into the box?
If so, I think I know what it is.
Cheers
