Well, if that's a fitting for a handle sticking out to the left then it looks very much like a silent butler.

Assuming the glass is a replacement and the gem an addition...

A jewelry box for men (cufflinks, etc.) or women?

The “handle” on the box looks to be about an inch or inch and a half long. Compare that to silent butlers that all have handles that are several inches long.

I see what you’re saying, the proportions are very similar if that actually was a fitting for a handle. But, would you want to see cigarette butts, crumbs and such? What was in the round bezel originally if not glass?

I don’t see where you said the dimensions. It appears to be about 3” square and 3/4” tall (minus the legs). The handle looks less than an inch long and maybe 1/3” diameter. Is that about right?

That’s a bit small to be used as a handle. And why would there be a mid section to it? What is that line around the middle? Does it pull open? Is it two pieces welded together. Makes no sense.

If it were larger, I’d think you’d hold the handle and push down on the clover thing on top with your thumb to open it away from you. But it seems too small for that to be practical.

Is that a mechanism holding it open or did you put something in it to hold it open for the picture?

Is the round glass the same glass that is on the sides? If not, then it’s fairly certain that there was something else there at one time. Still, why go to all the trouble of replacing whatever it was with plain glass? The box itself doesn’t look valuable enough to go to all that trouble.

Is there any indication if there was anything attached on the inside of the box?

The handle is gone, just the fitting to attach it remains.

I’s guess some ceramic or wood piece was originally there.

It’s described as handmade brass with decoration that appears to be from the art deco (or maybe art nouveau) era, teens to late thirties more or less. Would somebody have a handmade silent butler in this style, then repurpose it and put a window and a “gemstone” in the former handle?

It’s an oddity, this thing. I’m really thinking some ceremonial use, maybe brought over with immigrants or something. Contained some special object that was shown. Way too small for Torah scrolls.

It is made of wood with tinplate walls and nonmagnifying glass inset in the wooden cover.
Is it possible that the dowel could be fitted into the deck of a ship?
Could this be a binnacle housing a mariner’s compass? Except the compass is missing.
An ancient mariner might have matching binnacle, artificial horizon and sextant matching kits.

Oh, I see, the sides are tin. The tin appears to be crudely put in and doesn’t look original. Is it original?

The more I look at it the more it looks like someone had nothing better to do with his time. Weird combination of various materials.
