Last weekend we asked our readers to name the greatest drummers of all time. Everybody from Eric Carr to Animal from The Muppets got votes, but Led Zeppelin's John Bonham led the list by a significant margin.
1. John Bonham - Led Zeppelin 2. Keith Moon - The Who 3. Neil Peart - Rush 4. Dave Grohl - Nirvana/Foo Fighters 5. Ringo Starr - The Beatles 6. Buddy Rich 7. Stewart Copeland - The Police 8. ?uestlove - The Roots 9. Ginger Baker - Cream 10. Michael Shrieve - Santana/Sammy Hagar
One of these days Tito Puente's gonna be dead, and you're gonna say, 'Oh, I've been listening to him for years, and I think he's fabulous.' - Stripes
I was going to mention Terry Chambers. He was a fantastic drummer. I grew weary of Andy Partridge leftist rubbish lyrics and grew tired of XTC. Andy did not get on with Todd Rungren either. LOL!
The guy who play in the ska group The Specials was a good one too. they reformed after 20 years recently and he still can play.
Awesome.
No one played like Keith Moon. How it worked almost baffled me but it did.
I’m no drum expert, but Carl Palmer (ELP) would be on my list.
.
(Not many get it.)
His “fell off the face of the earth” was that he quit XTC and moved to Australia with his wife. John Evan, the keyboard player in Jethro Tull did the same thing.
Wicked! Pantera 4ever.
Love Carl...big influence on me from his Asia days alone. His solo back in 2007 when I saw the Asia reunion tour was phenomenal. Too bad he is a bit of a douchebag.
Oh me!Oh my!
Just this last note and off to bed!!
Everyone who’s responded has been wrong, on this thread!
To be considered the best drummer ever in the history of western civilization, you must be from New Orleans.
I certainly wasn’t, but I was born South of the Mason Dixon, which qualifies me to judge.
So, the best:

And his time is amateurish.
Have to agree. Buddy Rich is clearly #1.
Of all the works Carl Palmer performed in his life you chose to name ELP.
Gotta love it.
But how do you compare Carl Palmer and Aynsley Dunbar to any of the one genre (and some really just one band) drummers on these lists?
I’d throw in Carl Palmer too. And also Chicago’s drummer.
