Well, I just so happen to have a compass sitting right next to me and guess what, it’s pointing north and holding steady

My compass and I are calling BS!

It’s already been proven that magnetic North is constantly changing. Your compass will still point to North, its the local that changes.

“My compass and I are calling BS!”

It is a fact, see post 32. I say it is a posibility. It might also be the cause for the recent surge in Earthquakes around the Pacific basin. In fact in the Earths history the polarity of the poles have switched. I have always wondered what that would do. Would it also change the ocean currents?

Here's what AOL News says about the shift's effect on compass readings:

"Normally, magnetic fields don't require adjustments to be made at airports, FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto told FoxNews.com. 'You want to be absolutely precise in your compass heading,' Takemoto said. 'To make sure the precision is there that we need, you have to make these changes.'"

My guess is a handheld compass isn't sensitive enough to register the shift yet, but if it maintains its current pace of 40 miles/year, it won't be long before all compasses are affected.

Your compass is still pointing to N, but did you measure the declination? Compass north is not what it was.

The article is pointing out the declination is changing and if you fly on a constant compass heading, you will miss your destination. The declination indicated on your chart is no longer correct.

Your compass will still point to the magnetic north, it’s not going to start pointing south...the shift isn’t great enough yet. By the time it is great enough to have it point differently from North, we all will have been celestially spanked and you compass will be smashed to smithereens.

The compass always points to magnetic north.

Did you measure the declination? That is did you measure the difference between the magnetic north indicated by the compass and true north?
