‘Twas a month after Christmas on the floor of the House,
love and harmony abounding, no sign of a grouse.
Democrats and Republicans a fellowship hearty
with some from the left, some from the tea party.
“The economy’s growing - new jobs by the millions,”
no mention the deficit - increasing by trillions.
“Health care for all with nary a cost
the wars are all over, not one we have lost.
If we all pull together to get the job done
our future is certain, we’ll be number one.
With this thought I leave you as Commander-in-chief:
Our soldiers will serve openly, wearing only their briefs.”
And I heard he exclaim ere he strode out of sight
“God bless America, except for the Right.”
We’ve read them both more than once - the Fagles translations - but my son and I just started listening to a lecture series, and the assignment for lecture 3 is the first two books of the Iliad. We read Book I last night; it’s funnier than you’d expect, and several family members are in it!
Since FR went down last night, I have to catch up this morning. This has to be one of the funniest threads I’ve read in a long time. I actually spent the entire time playing Free Cell on my computer.
