If we export so much, how is it we are running the largest trade deficit in the history of the world?
We don’t export that much. We would gain far more from a “trade war”, than we would lose.
We continue to operate, on data (see: “Smoot-Hawley”) which has been completely divergent from reality for several decades.
Because of the consumer base. Our demand exceeds our internal production so we bring it in from outside. China and India, for example, have far more people, but their average consumer spends a microscopic fraction of what US citizens do. A trade deficit isn't necessarily bad if it is because you have a strong consumer base. It makes the world dependent on you.
We need targeted Tariffs—Not 100%—maybe $40 or less. It saved Harley Davidson under Reagan and other nations use it against us—Try to buy a Buick in Japan? Those who use slave labor to make things in the 3rd world should be forced to pay when they bring things into our land—if we do not—we will become a 3rd World nation ourselves. Ross Perot was a nut—but he had some good ideas.
