This is exactly what the US should be doing, e.g., acting in America’s interests. Surprise that might just happen with the Obama dude in charge is the only surprise here! Of course, this may be a core campaign contributor to the Dem’s and hence this administration actually acting in “America’s Interests” internationally.

This has nothing to do with American interests and everything to do with Monsanto's interests! If GMO is so harmless, why is Monstanto and all the other companies working so hard to hide it's presence in our food supply?!

Because people are trying to scare consumers for the benefit of European companies who do not have similarly profitable inventions to their name and whose businesses will have a harder time competing with a very good American product, etc. What's more, they do so at the expense of some very hungry people's lives in countries where crops that do not require spraying to make them insect resistant, and crops with extremely high yields would do a lot of good. Recall the Alar scare some years ago that hit the apple business? The Alar scare was generated by a frenzied media campaign by a company called Fenton Communications, as were a number of other scares, some targetting the dairy business. They take on such work for various special interest groups, namely econuts. I bet Fenton has contracts to stir up a scare about GMOs too.

Who is Fenton?

david fenton
Directed the anti-Bush media blitz for the group September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows
Radical anti-war protestor and Communist journalist In the 1960s, was a media specialist for the Liberation News Service and a photographer for the Weathermen, a domestic terrorist group [my note: see Obama's buddy Bill Ayers]
In the 1970s, orchestrated the "No Nukes" concerts
In the 1980s, worked in media relations for the Communist regimes of Angola, Nicaragua, and Grenada
His company, Fenton Communications, assists in the public relations strategies for MoveOn.org and Win Without War

Oh, and look what I just found:

Just as I thought:

1989 : (GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS SCARE-- See FENTON COMMUNISCATIONS, FAMINE IN AFRICA ) Since 1989, Fenton and his company, Fenton Communications, has been largely preoccupied with creating media strategies for left-wing groups, including one of his primary clients, Environmental Media Services. Its anti-biogenetic message, which claims that genetically engineered foods are dangerous to eat, has made millions of dollars for Fenton's clients, which include such health food producers as: Whole Foods Markets, Honest Tea, Kashi Cereal, Green Mountain Coffee, and Rodale Press, a magazine publisher of periodicals concerning organic gardening and foods.
This approach has also worked for ice cream producers Ben & Jerry's, another client of Fenton's. Starting with a series of press conferences in the late 1990s, Environmental Media Services promoted the idea that a hormone given to dairy cows to produce milk could cause cancer, despite the fact that the FDA had shown the hormone to be safe. Ben & Jerry's ice cream stood to gain from the bad press aimed at the dairy industry because their ice cream is made with hormone-free milk. --------This profile [of David Fenton] was adapted from the article titled "Peaceful Tomorrows, Leftists Todays," written by Thomas Ryan and published by FrontPageMagazine.com on March 17, 2004.

The US Biotec firms got a head start on the world in the late 80s, early 90's; and the entire time the nations of Europe screamed about Genetically Modified Foods (GMF) being a danger to your health, to your family line, the environment, etc. Then in the late 90's the European Farm Co-ops (read Governments) got their hands into the GMF production and now you do not hear a wimper from them the new EU about GMF since they feed it their own people. The entire issue about trade is that every nation wants to be a player in every industry (for instance take Airbus - fully Govt backed and always subsusdized).

So backing an American business interest instead of some other country's industry is not in our Interest - smakes of the same type thinking that allows the Dem's to pass of their socialism for economic planning.
