The announcer seemed pretty certain that the punter was instructed to kick the ball out of bounds. Based on the coach's reaction, I'd say that was probably true.

It would also explain why the punt coverage was so effed-up, since nobody on the Giants would have been expecting to have the punt fielded by the Eagles.

During Eagles postgame live, it was stated that the punter slightly mishandled the snap and panicked (forget whether Coughlin said it or it was reported by an Eagles beat reporter). Thus, instead of kicking it OB he sent a low liner to Jackson. Whoops...
