Latest Storm Headlines
* This has the potential to be the biggest snowstorm for much of Minnesota since Halloween, 1991.
* Potential for 1-2 feet of snow Saturday, with 2-5 foot drifts during the PM hours.
* Close to blizzard criteria - best chance of white-out conditions south/west of the metro area.
* Winter Storm Warning for much of Minnesota/Wisconsin. Blizzard Watch posted for southwestern MN.
* Get your errands/shopping done today, snow arrives late evening, between 8 and 10 pm, snow gets heavier and steadier as the night goes on - should be snowing heavily when we wake up Saturday morning.
* Conditions get worse as the day goes on tomorrow as winds increase and snow accumulates (even on the freeways and interstates). Temperatures will fall through the teens into the single digits - making it a light, powdery snow - prone to blowing and drifting.
* I know this is a mouthful, but travel simply isn't recommended Saturday and Saturday night. Never tell a Minnesotan not to travel, I get it. But the combination of snow/wind/falling temperatures will create truly treacherous conditions. If you run out of gas or go into a ditch tomorrow it could be more than just a minor inconvenience. With wind chill values dipping to -25 or lower it could quickly become life-threatening. Try to get your travel done by this evening, or plan on waiting until Sunday (afternoon) to get back on the highways.
* Wind chills by Saturday night dip down to -20 to -35, extreme danger zone.
Uffda......gonna make a whole lot of retailers unhappy to lose a prime pre-Christmas weekend’s worth of sales.
The kid was supposed to have a hockey game in Rochester tomorrow. We weren’t looking forward to the drive from the Cities even in good weather.
They already cancelled it last night.
The neighbors across the street are coming over for fondue. I have to stop by the liquor store on the way home. It should be a fun storm.
Hey up here in the UP of Michigan, we got that same warning. I am looking forward to it. Last night we had 5 inches of snow, when only 2 inches was predicted.
Have fun getting the snow taken care of in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Yes we want the snow. minimum of 12 inches has be predicted with blizzard warnings. Yipee. Up here in the UP of Michigan we want lots of snow for the last 2 years we have not had the normal 300 + inches. Milwaukee had more snow 105 inches last year and the year before.
“I have to stop by the liquor store on the way home.”
Thanks for indirectly reminding me. I should stop too. Just a six-pack of something simple...Miller High Life, Coors Extra Gold or something like that.
Lots of snow is good for your economy - skiing, snowmobiling, etc.
And it replenishes the watertable so that your waterfalls and rivers are running strong in thespring an ssummer. Dried-up waterfalls and rivers don’t attract tourists too well.
On a side note, I’ve been doing a little early checking around and I’m thinking a UP vacation might be in store next summer. Either the Keewenaw Peninsula or Sault Ste Marie. I’m just not sure where.
Where is the best place to rent a snowmobile on the range between Duluth and Grand Marais?
Perfect weather for Ice Fishing, break out the Auger...4 feet if ice.
In this area the really big storms come in from farther south. They swoop up through Colorado and drag all that Gulf moisture with it.
Is that a trick question? The Range isn’t between Duluth and Grand Marais.
How about Grain Belt Nordeast? Pretty good stuff.
Jeepers you Yoopers really like the snow.
Sounds like a nice, albeit cool-ish, fall day in Maine. :-)
I know Minnesotans aren't THIS hopeless. I mean, really? They need to be told that going out in whiteout conditions with 2-5 foot drifting snow is a bad idea? File that under "D" for "Duh".
Cool.
I have to stop by the liquor store on the way home.
I grew up in Minnesota. There were a few times when we got snowed in so bad you couldn’t travel for a couple of days. Our neighborhood would make a party out of it.
One guy had a snowmobile, and I recall him making trips to the liquor store when supplies got depleted. Having enough food never seemed to be a problem though!
A local talker regularly goes on about “Who are they writing these stories for?” Not just about weather. Newspapers write the most pathetic “advice” stories. You really have to wonder what kind of morons do they think we are?
You must get similar stories out there?
Blizzard Warning for NW and NC Iowa now too. Every county in Iowa is under some kind of weather warning or advisory.
Meanwhile, I'm usually the only one who shows up at work. :-) I love the peace and quiet.
True story.... We were having a blizzard that was fairly respectable - 6-8". I *had* to get to the store, for something that escapes me now. There was a guy in the parking lot of the store, he had bought out all of the bread and was scalping it at $5 a loaf. Had plenty of takers, too.
Dunno why, everything usually melts within a day or two.....which is why I live down here, and no longer up there. :-)
Tomorrow in Southern California, were expecting about 76 degrees, clear, sunny with a nice on-shore Pacific breeze!
LOL, I do LOVE entrepreneurial spirit. Willing seller, willing buyer, perfectly acceptable in my mind.
It does bring the saying about a "fool and his money" to mind, however.
