I've never posted a vanity before so I'm ready for the scolding I'll get for doing it, but I need help. My wife and I are considering buying a handgun and while I've fired a variety of guns previously at a range with friends, I've never bought or owned one. I know FR is full of 2nd amendment advocates and was hoping I could get some help as to what to buy.
It would be for both my wife and I for occasional use at a range and, in the unlikely event of a home invasion, self defense.
I don't want something too powerful for my wife to easily handle but at the same time I don't want something that would be ineffective in a self defense situation. Any suggestions?

My nearest neighbor lives 3 miles away, through the woods. Why should I be worried about shooting him or her, unless my neighbor is the one breaking into my house?
Can you please give me an example of someone shooting at an intruder, who is inside their house, with a .44 or .357 and killing their neighbor instead of, or along with the intruder? I see your argument posted on these gun/home defense threads all the time. I have never seen anyone back up their claims with any instances of it happening.

A Ruger 10-22 is a fun gun to shoot, short range, but its range is shorter than other .22s, and its accuracy dwindles more quickly than a remington as range increases. (I have both)

He’s knowledgeable on firearms but follows the NRA blindly. That is the root of his problem with FR.
The Ruger 10-22 is a great rifle. A real classic and very reliable. In my experience they tend to be only acceptable as far as accuracy is concerned.
I know they can be tuned by experts to shoot extremely well but I am talking about out-of-the-box accuracy.
Interestingly, one of the most accurate is also one of the cheapest. The Marlin model 60. Every single one I have ever owned or shot was a tack driver. The one my Father owned was exceptional.
I never made a claim about caliber penetration. I am well aware that a .44 mag. will have greater penetration than a .45 acp. I never made the claim it didn't.
I asked you for an example, any example, showing where someone shot at an intruder inside their own home with a .357 or .44 mag and killed a neighbor.
You made the claim so put up or shut up. Do some proof reading if you can't remember what you wrote in a previous post.
