First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to announce on Monday a major new initiative that would place up to 5,000 salad bars in public schools nationwide, despite uncertainties over how local health inspectors might treat those salad bars and USDA nutrition-tracking rules that could prove a major impediment.
Officials in the White House, led by chef Sam Kass, and at the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention, have been working to build a coalition representing the produce industry and Ann Cooper, director of nutrition services in Boulder, Colo. schools, who recently teamed with Whole Foods to raise $1.4 million from customers to establish a grant program that would place salad bars in qualifying schools.
Under the initiative expected to be announced on Monday in Florida, where First Lady Michelle Obama has taken her "Let's Move" campaign to fight childhood obesity, Cooper would manage applications for salad bars from the schools along with distribution of funds to purchase necessary equipment.
One potential obstacle to the program is the refusal of many school districts to install salad bars for food-safety reasons and because of cumbersome USDA rules governing the federally subsidized school lunch program that feeds some 31 million U.S. school children every day.
Cooper named three school districts she knows of -- Philadelphia, Austin, Tex., and Montgomery County, Md., -- that have already indicated they will not support salad bars. Concerns have been raised that elementary school children in particular might be prone to spread disease at salad bars because they are too short for the standard "sneeze guard" installed on most salad bars, or because they might use their hands instead of the serving utensils provided.
Cooper, who would not comment on the pending White House announcement, has dismissed those concerns, saying, "As far as Ive found out,

They forgot the part where they have to hire government goons to force the kids to eat at the salad bar.
Oh, you mean Michelle will be there?
You are correct healthy foods are expensive and the fat, salt and sugar laden stuff is generally cheaper. I agree that local charities with the inclination to feed poor kids is a great idea.
LOL! Perfect!
Many adults and children are allergic to MSG.
LOL I didn’t know he had a name! Does anyone know who he actually is?
Yep, I avoid it like the plague. I personally have not had issues, by my dad’s heart went into A-fib from exposure. He thought he was having a heart attack. We started label reading about five years ago. The best solution is to cook from scratch. I usually cook in bulk and freeze extra.
It's right next to the glittering right to murder your unborn children.
Let’s see, when the listeria laced lettuce and carrots get bagged in Mexico and distributed to schools, the enemies of America can generate a regular epidemic of dying kids in America. Yeah, that sounds like a great democrat stratgey, since they want to reduce the population to the ‘manageable levels’ their progressive demigods have told them to reach for. ... And these bastards are still running America!
The peanut thing drives me nuts. This is a direct result of liberal policies: free formula and peanut butter for baby mamas. I am a huge advocate of breast feeding through year one, and my son was not exposed to peanuts until he was two (so just recently). It’s so easy for these people to give the kid a PB&J sandwich instead of age appropriate food that their little bodies can actually handle.
Schools, whether they get government grants or not, are not going to go to the trouble of providing fresh, organic foods to children. It is too much trouble for them.
Pathetic. JFK boosted the Moon Program. Obama’s lovely bride forces salad bars into schools. How far we’ve fallen and how downright evil Democrats have become.
classic compare-contrast image...........or the beauties and a beast
“I’m of a mind that kids would all be better off to go back to brown bagging”
I make my kids lunches and I know for a fact that it is fresher, healthier and a lot tastier than anything they get at school. In Montgomery County, the same lunches provided to the schools are provided to the jail. I have sent in salads, homemade soups, sandwiches and homemade brownies or cookies. My kids have been told, “You are so lucky”. All it takes is some time and a bit of planning. No way my kid is going to eat the same junk given to prisoners. No way. Just a thought.
They're now easing her away from her odious "Let them eat cake" image into a perky "Let them eat salad" image.....and hoping for a more positive opinion of her.
Of course, we taxpayers will soon be eating beans and sawdust-enhanced hot dogs off of tin plates if this Addams Family continues to squat in the White House where they dine on broiled lobster and imported Kobe beef ($60 lb.).

Aren’t “salad bars” like a major source of food poisoning and food borne illness?
Brilliant!
Yes, it feels like I know him! LOL
