Washington sources disclose that the three-month settlement construction freeze-for-incentives deal Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu discussed with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Friday, Nov. 12, also included a commitment to hold Israel-Palestinian negotiations on the two states' final borders during that period.
Assuming the talks collapse, the Obama administration will take the initiative of delineating those borders and present its own map to both sides before the three months are up. Our sources disclose that the boundaries the US map will adhere a lot more closely to Palestinian territorial aspirations than to Israel case. While no one is talking about imposing it on Israel, a rejection by the Netanyahu government would place it on a collision course with the Obama White House.
Word about Obama's planned map was not relayed to the Israeli cabinet Sunday, Nov. 14 when Netanyahu reported to the cabinet on his talks with US leaders last week, our Jerusalem sources report.
According to our Washington sources, Obama believes that leaving Israel with no more than 4-4.5 percent of the pre-1967 West Bank area should satisfy its essential security requirements. In terms of population, this would entail the evacuation of dozens of settlements plus two important towns, Efrat in Gush Etzion in the south which has a population of 8,000, and Ariel in Samaria which has 20,000 inhabitants.
For Washington, it is the Palestinians who are laying down the law. After his ultimatum on construction was accepted as an obstacle to talks, the Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas now warns Washington that if every last Jewish resident is not cleared from Ariel, there will be no peace accord. Even when the former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert held talks with Mahmoud Abbas in 2007 and 2008, Washington backed his demand for at least 5.9 percent of the land although the figure quoted by Olmert is 6.5 percent.
It was understood that in the past 33 years, these locations had developed exponentially each time the Palestinians refused to discuss peace and resorted to violence. As for the US incentives offered Israel for accepting a second moratorium on settlement construction, Netanyahu neglected to mention the corresponding benefits to be offered the Palestinians.
The Obama administration is willing to let Israel have 20 F-35 stealth warplanes worth $3 billion in addition to the 20 already allocated and promises to veto anti-Israeli motions at the UN and other international bodies.
No one knows what promises are contained in the letter under preparation at the White House for the Palestinian Authority chairman.
President Palin can’t be sworn in soon enough!
There was no peace before the settlers went into Ariel.
Hang tough, Israel. Let us deal with the Obamists. Don't make any deals with anyone that you can't live with.
Debka does not have a reputation as a reliable source as has been proven over and over at this site. Take their information with a grain of salt.
Is that 0bama's vote status or dictation?
The less direct input the U.S. has on those borders, the better off will be the U.S. after any “new” borders are discussed and debated between Israel and anyone else in the region.
There will be NO “winners” concerning such proposed borders, only various shades of something lost and varying belief of how much that is the case by either party.
We don’t need either party seeing a “U.S. hand print” on those borders, unless we want to create an enemy of ourselves to all parties involved, as did the British.
We would be an enemy to all parties because nothing will ever be enough for the Palestinians and striving to please such a demand will only produce a set of less secure borders for Israel.
The Palestinians alone need to decide which they want more - peace, or continued warfare to obtain the impossible. Once they decide they want peace more than they want anything else, they will not only make an agreement with Israel, they will begin to make the steps needed to continue in peace with Israel.
Until that day comes, the Palestinians will see any agreement as temporary and but one more step in completing their total aims, eventually.
Gee now there's a real surprise.
Let me understand this, the palis expect an arab “palestine” to be Jew free. No Jews to live there..... can Israel then kick out all the arabs living within their borders? Does sound faaaaaaaair to me.
I don’t give a good rip about ANYTHING Obama has to say on ANY subject. He hasn’t a CLUE....
Debka can’t correctly report current events. Why would we think they could predict the future 3 months from now?
No worries. The Obama White House is on a collision with the American voter!
He’s got another 10 months or so to achieve that “peace” agreement between Israel & her enemies. it will be received as his having “earned” his Nobel Peace Prize. Then there will be a demand for him to resign the presidency (leaving Hillary in charge) for the U.N. SecGen.
Personally, I see opposing the 'zero house' becoming politically fashionable, locally and abroad.
Even within his own party.
Unfortunately, if history is any indicator...
Republicans will nominate some spineless, RINO, “liberal light”, politically correct, self justifying, seeker of media and Washington DC approval, sycophant like John McCain last time and Conservatism will have lost yet another opportunity to steer the ship of state away from big government socialism.
Israel will be swapped with the plo and mohamada hamada hamada will be king of ubamma land and mooselimb theme parkk..
