Word For The Day, Thursday, November 4, 2010 - psephology
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 4 November 2010 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

psephology \see-FAH-luh-jee\ noun
the scientific study of elections

Example sentence:
"To help voters make up their minds, this issue contains a 20-page briefing on personality, policy and psephology."
--- The Economist, April 10, 2010

Etymology:
"Psephology" is from the Greek word "psēphos," meaning "pebble." (One relative of "psephology" is "psephomancy," meaning "divination by pebbles.") "Psephology" merited election as the name for the work of analysts of elections, or psephologists, because pebbles were used by the ancient Greeks in voting. Similarly, the word "ballot" was an excellent choice for a means of voting since it is derived from "balla," the Italian word for "ball," and Italians placed balls in a container to cast votes.

Word Trivia: What word meaning "to banish" or "to exclude from a group" comes from an ancient Greek method of voting by writing a name down on a pottery fragment?

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

That is hilarious-especially because the photo looks JUST like a former co-worker of mine who lusted so openly for our gorgeous-but-younger-and married boss that it was an embarrassment to him and a constant source of amusement for the rest of us who worked there...

No one has the brass appliances to administer justice to zero. I just want him out of office and off my TV and radio. Is that too much to ask?
A+ for you.
I hope your temp gauge isn't too pricey. We just paid over $500 for a driver's side window that wouldn't go up and needed new plastic German parts. Do not get me started on why it cost over four times as much as it took for the garage door repair on my house!

Excellent! Love it.

tone deaf doesn’t begin to explain it.......neither does his incredible arrogance. Beck is falling short on my tv right now, too.....but NOW I can hope wonder if he will die in a terrorist attack while there.....I might have to follow this trip now.

Thank you! Temperature gauges are not pricey, especially for an old car like mine-but those power window assemblies are, no matter how old the vehicle is-hundreds for just the motor.

As Nixonian as the idiot-in-chief is, complete with paranoia and enemy lists, I think he may do the full monte and follow in that one’s illegal footsteps. As pissed as most of America is, I rather doubt he could just resign and fade away as Nixon did, either.

Thinking about that lust struck co-worker’s attempts to snare a night with the boss, she even wore hunting togs to work, even though she was 40 pounds overweight and so didn’t ambulate that well in tight skirts and f*** me pumps-she was also from up north and afraid of our big cucarachas.

One morning she came in, turned on the light in her office, saw a cucaracha on her chair, screamed bloody murder, caught her high heel between the legs of the chair and fell right on her fat ass-that big heifer made such a racket and shook the walls when she fell so that we all came running. Everafter, the rest of us referred to the incident as the day that Vicky did the roach dance in heels...

i wasn’t listening to beck, am in the other room, but i sure hope he has no attacks on him. Good Lord, Ti, they’d make him a martyr and canonize him on the spot. it would be MLK on stilts!

Don’t need psephology to see how some people finally regained sanity:

How much air freshner have you used today? Is the stench peculiar to that breed of dog? At the risk of sounding dumb, I’ve never heard of that-Husky girl doesn’t have a bad odor, nor have any of the other 3 spayed female dogs I’ve had over the last thirty-some years, nor did our neutered male Chow-but I’ve only had medium and large-sized dogs, never one under 40 pounds-is it just small dogs that smell like that?

We need to ask SG. I have no idea. SG suggested this might be the reason for the stench and I recall taking her once before bc of the smell. it may even be dog specific bc loosh has never smelled from it, he will just boot scoot.

I’ll be interested to hear what the cause is, as I’ve never heard of it-the only dog smell I’m familiar with is when they need a bath every 2-4 weeks in the summertime, and that is still a circus here-Husky girl still screams like a mountain lion is dragging her off for 5 minutes or so as soon as I turn on the water, even though I get into the shower with her.

Some breeds are more afflicted than others and cannot empty with normal bowel routines and need extra help clearing the sacs(sorry, don’t mean to be crude). The glands serve a useful purpose but can become clogged with debris or inflammation. Whenever they develop an odor and/or start scooting, that is usually the cause. As a child, we had a Boston terrier that needed to be expressed periodically but it’s never been a problem with the collies or any of the other dogs we’ve had.

I used to go in the shower with Darby the jack Russell bc he was short haired and was easy to lather and rinse and he didn’t mind being wet. These two endure baths but I do them in the laundry tub bc they have more hair. They usually are hanging around my neck while I am lathering them and rinsing them. I have them groomed routinely though since I can’t dry them well enough and then they have that wet dog smell!
