A Maine Coon cat named Stewie is the new record holder for "world's longest cat," according to the Reno Gazette-Journal. His recent measurement from his nose to the tip of his tail bone put him at 48 and a half inches, a half inch longer than the original record holder. The cat's owner, Robin Hendrickson, says the Maine coon's full name is Mymains Stewart Gilligan.
According to Wikipedia, Maine coons really do hail from Maine, but there are other theories regarding their deeper origins. One such theory says that they are descended from Marie Antoinette's Turkish Angora cats, who bred with native North American shorter-haired breeds upon arrival.

We took in a Maine Coon Cat as a stray a few years ago. While the cat still maintained it’s hunting prowess, it would come in at night, allow us to pet her, give her flea meds and always came running to them, when our kids cried! Followed us on walks well over a mile from the house and brought us the fruits of her hunting fun. Mice, lizards, birds, frogs. Too bad she at a poisoned rat and died.
I never knew a dachshund and a cat could produce viable offspring.
One for the kitty ping list...

What a beautiful gift from god!
You beat me to it!
My Rocket is a Maine Coon. They are the sweetest kittehs. But he wouldn’t win any “longest” prizes, LOL! He’s a runt. A really nice runt.
I have a 17 year old Maine Coon named Max. He is one of the nicest smartest cats I have ever known.
Friendly to everyone and a good cat to greet and meet a new cat addition to the house.
Good Lord. That is a giant cat!
That cats a beaut! Woo wee.
That is a gorgeous kitty!
Absolutely wonderful personalities. If they were human they’d want to have a beer with you and watch the game.
I love Maine Coons. We have two with very different personalities. One is big, fat, and lazy but also very companionable and loves to snuggle with my wife and daughter when they nap; he’s a gigantic furry teddy bear. The other is skinny as a rail and still a bit scared even after seven years (he’s a rescue) but loves to jump up in my lap and lie down and purr.
They’re wonderful animals. “Companionable” is the word I hear thrown around most often about the breed, and in our case, that’s an understatement!

Oh wow, that is a beautiful cat. Classic Maine Coon pose, too. “Why, yes, I’m on ‘your’ quilt. Is there a problem? I didn’t think so.” :)

A really smart and human like breed. Wonderful cat.
Our Maine coon was the neatest cat ever. We lost her a couple years ago. Sometimes I dream about her and wake up crying because I miss her so much. Very loyal and intuitive, not to mention extremely beautiful.
