Set to be spayed, Lab bears 16 puppies

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash.- A Labrador retriever who was set to be spayed has given its owners in Washington state a litter of 16 puppies.

When the Hurst family of Whidbey Island took 3-year-old chocolate Lab Sugar Baby to a vet for a consultation about spaying her, they found out she was pregnant, the Whidbey (Wash.) News Times reported.

The dog started delivering puppies around noon Tuesday and she didn't finish for more than 12 hours, producing 16 black or yellow puppies -- one male black lab, six female black labs, five male yellow labs and four female yellow labs. Despite being a chocolate lab, Sugar did not give birth to any brown dogs.

Lacey Hurst took mother and brood to the veterinarian Wednesday and they are all in good health. She said some of the puppies will have to be bottle-fed because Sugar won't be able to produce enough milk to nurse all of them.

The puppies' father is probably a black lab they encountered while camping at Lake Stevens over the summer, Hurst said.

My mother laments that we outlive them, and hypothesizes that God made it that way because they love us more than we love them and couldn’t tolerate the grief.

That's a lovely thought.

My best friend is a male yellow Lab who will turn 14 in a few weeks. He is slowing down now, and I don’t know how much longer he will last. However, get him near a body of water with a frisbee in your hand, and the years seem to melt away, if only for a short time. He has had a wonderful life and has made my life so much richer.

Well, that just lends credence to the old myth that Chocolate Labs are dumb!

OK, back off all you Choc Lab doggie parents. I'm just kidding. I love Choc labs. My neighbor's was named Hershey. Sweet dog, but she died young. Cancer.

She’s gorgeous. That must be a pretty fancy camera that took that picture. You can see every hair on her head and a drop of salilva on the edge of her tongue.

Our Black Lab had a litter of 11 on September 3rd - 7 survived. There are 5 Black and two yellow - 4 are males and three females (yellow = one male/one female). The male yellow appears to have something wrong with his hips, but is starting to walk much better of late. Now we need to have our female spayed so she doesn’t have another litter.

What gorgeous teeth! (So’s the rest of her, of course!) Do you brush them? Special diet or chewies?

Give her all the love you have right now.

Your heart will break...as mine did. I had 14 years with the best dog in the world.

But she left me primed to love and I rescued 2 more dogs that would have likely been euthanized if they didn’t find a forever home.

They didn’t fill the hole my best girl left , my heart just got bigger.

My Bocephus died back in May of 2009. We wouldn't be alive if it weren't for Bocephus. He saved our lives. He got us out when our house burned, Oct. 2007. We lost everything. But Bocephus saved us.

He was my best friend.

My pup was one of twelve born on St.Patrick's Day.

She was also born green, when she passed through the birth canal, the placenta rubbed against her fur giving her a green tint. She is a lovely cream color now, with a tan mohawk going down her back.
