The increase of vulgarity and profanity on this board is troublesome to me. It was not always so. I can remember the olden days. There was no profanity. None. And there was no chat. None. The first Freepers held one another to a high standard of discourse.
I wonder why and how the profanity has become so common? The rule in the reply box includes no profanity. Do we have a problem of definition as to what constitutes profanity? Does replacing one of the letters in the F word with %## or ! mean that we have not used profanity in our posting?
Im not really sure where to go with this. Certainly the site owner and his empowered moderators are the arbiter of what is to be allowed. I guess the best I would hope for is to encourage us all to think just a bit more about trying for forceful language without gutter language.
That is all.
Not usually, I have been called a fool by many people, mostly liberals.
Clever. Not.
Pachyrhizus! Parasites! Patagonians! Pestilential Pachyderm! Phylloxera! Pickled herrings! Pirates! Pithecanthropic montebanks! Pithecanthropic pickpocket! Pithecanthropus! Pockmarks! Politican! Poltroons! Polygraphs! Polynesian! Profiteers! Psychopath! Purple profiteering jellyfish! Pyrographers! Pyromaniac!
Any and all of these could effectively replace the F word. And here's the link you supplied, again
Expand on that, please. What is wrong with encouraging posters here to obey the rules that state "no profanity"?
Jim Robinson has been pinged to this thread, I believe more than once.
If the word derived from "for unlawful carnal knowledge" is not profanity, then there is no such thing as profanity.
Ok, whatever dan-o be agitated by words I don’t care. I understand carnal knowledge I think you however suffer from cranial rectumtitus.
If you don’t care, why keep posting back to the thread?
That's not the result I was hoping for. And I wonder if it signals a change in policy and if the FReepers who really want to F bomb their posts will now have it their way w/o having to substitute %#!* for a letter in their indespensible word?
It’s still there under “spell” “preview” and “post”.
That was crude.
Now I see it. Never mind. It continues to be unenforced / ignored, and folks get all huffy when called on it; which matters not to me. I’m going to keep calling folks as I feel the need.
I’m with you. :)
We are supposed to be better than DU, but oft times I see posts that reflect no honor, no civility and no sense of civilized language and debate.
Sad to see this trend, as I fear in a few short years, open profanity and shrill voices will be all that is left of the Grant Experiment started by JR.
Crude yes, but was it profane?
profanity
noun
1 he hissed a profanity | an outburst of profanity: oath, swear word, expletive, curse, obscenity, four-letter word, dirty word; blasphemy, swearing, foul language, bad language, cursing; informal cuss, cuss word; formal imprecation; archaic execration.
2 some traditional festivals were tainted with profanity: sacrilege, blasphemy, irreligion, ungodliness, impiety, irreverence, disrespect.
Oh good. You cleared that up it wasn’t profane.
Except for Patton. He wanted to make sure his troops remembered what he said.
