20 of the most epic failures in network science fiction TV
Blastr.com ^ | 09/21/10

The new TV season starts in earnest this week, and as usual it brings with it the promise of all kinds of new sci-fi, fantasy and horror treats for us to watch. And all too soon it will also bring with it an inevitable round of cancelations as shows that seemed like they were just getting going get cut short when the ratings take a sudden downturn (or maybe a slow decline).

Before we fall in love with too many new darlings only to lose them too soon, we thought it was a good time to look back over some of the most promising new network shows in the last 10 years that also seemed fresh and young ... only to flame out spectacularly.

The list could go well past 20 of course, but all of these stood out in some way during their brief time in the sun, either because so many viewers tuned in at first that cancelation seemed impossible, or because creatively they seemed a cut above the average TV fare.

I remember watching reruns of Lost in Space and noticing how all scientific observations were written down in pencil on a clipboard. Now that makes me wonder how writers could envision advanced robots, but not computers for storage of information.

Odyssey 5 and got a decent run of a season or so. The DVDs were out at one time. Great series that got cut way short.

I really loved a show which was on many years ago. I think “The Invaders” only lasted one or two seasons.

I ordered the entire set on Netflix and was a bit disappointed at the first few episodes then it began to grow on me again.

They had a lot of interviews with Roy Thinnes and others involved with the show. The guy who created it was a communist tho Quinn Martin, the producer seemed fairly conservative. It turns out the show is still very popular in France.

Okay, how about Star Maidens, aka “the one about feminists from the planet medusa”? Anyone else see any episodes of that?

All I really remember is the title (I was about 8 or 10?) Was there a set of blond twins on that show?

Firefly was Fox's fault....Putting it up against Stargate 1 was just stupid. Where did they think they were going to get their audience?

The Tick was also stellar. Patrick Warburton's delivery stilted mannerisms were just hilarious.

"We have a fiendishly clever commode. It's already taken the bathtub as an ally in its porcelain war against us."

From that list I wish they had continued Firefly, Defying Gravity, and Journeyman. Great shows with above average acting.

I LOVED Space 1999, because it was so bad.

“The moon, John! It’s the moon!”

I remember one where there was supposed to be a storm in front of a cave. You could see someone waving long grass over the opening.

It was so bad it was good.

Andy Griffith at his best! I have tried to find Salvage and/or Salvage One on DVD. I think that both shows were the same but for some reason at the time the second version had to be re-named.
