I know several Iraqi Muslim families. They celebrate birthdays and buy gifts for their kids.
Well that’s true. I assume it is because they are not so hyper religious as some others are.
But you do know, don’t you, that the Obama family is very very well known for smugly announcing that they do not give birthday gifts to their children, and they do not give Christmas gifts to their children nor do they give them to each other?

Was Michelle's family Jehovahs Witness? That would even more easily explain it. And the parents do give
Christmas gifts to each other either because Barry said he gives nicer gifts than he gets and Michelle said, "No way! I gave you good gifts last year."
As far as my Iraqi friends are concerned, they all observe Ramadan but only one of the families is strict about halal v haram food, does the prayers at the specific times, and doesn't wear Western clothes (well, their kids do) and they celebrate their kids' birthdays with gifts and a cake. They also consider Al Qaeda, the Taliban to be wacko nut jobs and Shi'a to be a fifth column for Iranian agitation (having themselves been targeted by Muqtada al Sadr's group).
