I think the Berber are ethnically distinct from all the Semites, but the Afroasiatic language group has six divisions ~ to wit: Berber, Chadic, Cushitic, Egyptian, Omotic and Semitic.

What that means is they have a number of grammatical forms and a serious piece of vocabulary in common but otherwise are not mutually understandable. You have to learn the others to understand them ~ just like in the Indo-European languages. Knowing German doesn't enable you to deal easily with Punjabi.
