Hey, Washington Monthly: Jefferson Davis was a Democrat
Grand Old Partisan ^ | August 6, 2010 | Michael Zak

Grand Old Partisan salutes John Bingham, principal author of the 14th Amendment and a great REPUBLICAN.

Writing yesterday in The Washington Monthly, Steve Benen accused the GOP of going "From the Party of Bush to the Party of Jefferson Davis." His point, it seems, is that questioning whether the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to children born in the USA of people here illegally is akin to advocating slavery. Such absurdity is not worth refuting. I will, however, point out a fact that Benen overlooks -- the Party of Jefferson Davis is the DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

Indeed, the Democratic Party was the Party of Slavery, and Democrats were known as "Slave-ocrats" by the GOP. Yes, Jefferson Davis was a Democrat, as were all the Confederates. Not one Republican fought against the Union during the Civil War.

In yesterday's Washington Post, E.J. Dionne accused the GOP of shedding a birthright. Like Benen, he argued that the framers of the 14th Amendment -- all Republicans, by the way -- had in mind what Dionne and Benen and so many other Democrats say they intended back in the 1860s.

The Democrats opposed the 14th Amendment yet now assert that they know best what Rep. John Bingham (R-OH) meant when he wrote it.

By ignoring the heritage of our Grand Old Party, Republicans place themselves on the defensive and make themselves vulnerable to Democrat demagoguery, such as the latest from Benen and Dionne.

This shameless blog pimp is annoying in the extreme and is here to advance his career at our expense. He offers no insights of his own, merely redirects to his blog ... which frankly, is amateurish and vulgar. Look at his posting record...the titles are all his constant anti-southern diatribes and his comments are the same...if incessant links and shameless huckstering for his “book” and his “blog” can be considered comments. His relentless attacks on the South, sweeping generalizations and references to the south and to the people of the south are both sickening and anathema to those of us who were born in the south and support our constitution and the hope for a free republic.

I’ve read quite a bit of history, among which were many personal accounts and undeniable historical fact. Perhaps others on this thread should try reading beyond the revisionist tripe the pro-secessionist DUmocrats are presenting as “fact” just to push their agenda.

1) the Democrats were REACTIONARIES not conservatives and clung to a semi-feudal economic system.

2) having southern democrats of 1860s interpret the constitution is laughable on its face. Al Queda probably would do a better job of explaining it.

I am no fan of the first Democrat but his relation with Sally Hemmings was not one of rape. She was the half sister of his wife who had died years before TJ hooked up with her and I have no doubt their affair was a loving one given the constraints of the society.

Sally was 7/8s white as well and probably resembled his wife.
