I came home from work monday to find a letter from the Teamsters saying that one of my co-workers expressed interest in the union coming in and setting up shop. After first swearing to find the moron who wrote the Teamsters and have a little talk with him, It came to me that this might really happen. The other day the owners had a labor lawyer come in and tell the managers and owners what can happen, including threats, vandalism, giant inflatable rats in front of their homes and other stuff. I admit that my company could maybe pay a little more, but this is the same place that bent over backwards to advoid laying off people in the winter, and scraped up enough to pay Christmas bonuses. Am I silly to give them a little loyality? They have been decent to me and I bear them no malice. My bosses are nice guys. They realize we bust our rear ends and that sometimes we take a little downtime to shoot the breeze. And if we are all caught up, they even join in and talk about women, guns and life in general. With a union, all this ends. They have to become hardasses because if they dont, they will be fired and replaced with people who dont know or care about us. I am asking the question to all those who have been thru this: What can I and my co-workers expect? There have been rumblings that the company might even shut down to advoid dealing with the union. Thanks in advance for all those who answer and can offer advice.
That's irresistible.
This is really good advice. Don't make any rash moves. If you don't want the union, then lobby your fellow co-workers. You are in a campaign my FRiend.
We had an organizing drive at our company. We played by the rules (the company must handle itself properly). Sounds like they got an law firm to guide them. That is what I did. In the end the union did not win the vote.
It sounds like the owners of your company runs things properly. Treat your employees right and the union usually does not get in. Even the unions know that. But nobody should think there are not companies out there that deserve what they get the way they treat their employees. I sat in clubs with a bunch of them. They always asked why our output was so much higher. I told them because I don't treat my employees like garbage.
Likely a couple of employees have approached the union. I doubt it is like others on here have said that the union just showed up. Those employees have the right to try and organize and the company. The company owners should and must respect that. This is America.
Generally I don’t agree with all of that but you have it pretty close. The basic message is get out there and campaign. It sounds like you have been through it, like experience is speaking.
I did check, and I did see the correct spelling there too. I thought it meant that either was correct, but it was probably its way of saying “do you want to spell it the right way, or do you want to leave it as is, you moron?”
I picked my pet nit. I won't begrudge you yours. (But I will be extra-careful with the spell check this time.)
And a year after being there some egghead from corporate will fly in and tell you he is turning the China operations over to a Chinese National. He will brag back at the home office he saved your $150,000 salary and then find he has cost the company a million or so in either bad quality product or sales going out the back door.
Just wait until you are in a heated debate with someone and they then use your spelling error as a point against you.
you may try reminding your coworkers about the bonuses and the non layoffs in tough times.....
I am forced to belong to a union and I hate it......it is what it is......
they swear they won't use union dues for politics but they find ways around it....
I was in a heated debate. Moot/mute is a serious issue! :-)
Don't be fooled....Companies have little or no loyalty left for their employees...They'll replace you in a minute with a lower wage employee if possible, or just out source your job, and say, "See ya."
