If your company goes Union, unless you are in a Right to Work state you really have no choice but to join. The FReepers who are telling you to quit your job arent going to turn around and offer to pay your bills for you. This is really good advice. Don't make any rash moves. If you don't want the union, then lobby your fellow co-workers. You are in a campaign my FRiend.
We had an organizing drive at our company. We played by the rules (the company must handle itself properly). Sounds like they got an law firm to guide them. That is what I did. In the end the union did not win the vote.
It sounds like the owners of your company runs things properly. Treat your employees right and the union usually does not get in. Even the unions know that. But nobody should think there are not companies out there that deserve what they get the way they treat their employees. I sat in clubs with a bunch of them. They always asked why our output was so much higher. I told them because I don't treat my employees like garbage.
Likely a couple of employees have approached the union. I doubt it is like others on here have said that the union just showed up. Those employees have the right to try and organize and the company. The company owners should and must respect that. This is America.

gunsequalfreedom you have one of the best and most honest post here. I've worked in both union and non-union companies. There is good and bad to both sides.
I now work for a company that treats the employees like dirt. If you complain they say, well if you don't like it there's the door. But if you go over their head, then it's you know our doors is always open, Only to fire the person that went over their head. Just this week they started making us work three 12 hour days (where most companies would go ahead and pay for 40 hours) we will only get paid for 36, and if needed, we have to work our day off for straight pay. This from a company that boost about being debt free, and rich. Our warehouse (which is one of I believe 3400 across the US)makes up to 100 million a year, the CEO is paid over 4 million a year, and their cutting our hours so management can receives a 1% bonus for every hour they cut. My vacation and personal/sick time is going from 30 days (which I just got) a year to 18. I'll be losing somewhere around 7k a year.I've been there since the beginning (10 years now) even been employee of the month. And this is how they treat the ones that help make this place what it is. And some of you still don't think a union is needed in some (not all) places? After talking with HR and explaining that I just bought a house that I needed my 40hrs and that there is enough work there for 40hrs. which got me no where. Other than well maybe you;ll have to make a hard decision (meaning there's the door). So,last week I made my decision and met with a Teamsters local rep. I'm already up to 18 cards signed and only need about 22 more. So here's to opeing peoples eyes Cheers
