I installed a new harddrive and new XP pro on my sons computer today. All is fine except it cannot access the internet.
When I try to create a network, it says it cannot find network adaptors and devices.
It is a new installation, any ideas?

WINXP installs generic drivers when and where it can
LOL. Yesterday, one of my Vista boxes gave me a message that it had detected some new unidentified hardware (I’ve not installed anything new on it). It then said it had successfully installed the necessary drivers.
There must be a database of drivers for unknown hardware somewhere.
Weird.

You need two things with a new disk and OS:
The chipset drivers (if network adapter is on motherboard), and the OS drivers for the network adapter.

OK first question are you using an wired or wireless network card?
That's not unusual.
Look in control panel / system / device manager. It will show if network devices are present or not, and if they have installation issues.
You have to find out who the manufacturer of the card is. If it is a wired card that sits in a slot on the motherboard, make sure it's seated properly, then get the name and model of the card and download the driver from the card manufacturer.
If it's a network connector built into the motherboard, you have to search for the motherboard by manufacturer and model and get the network driver from their website.
If it's a computer from a manufacturer like Dell or HP, the drivers will be at the companies website organized by computer name and model.
Once you have the correct network card model, the driver can be downloaded to another computer and copied to a USB stick. Take the USB stick to the new XP machine and either do a search for new hardware in control panel or right click on the mis-installed network card in device manager and choose update driver. When the machine asks for a driver, point it to the correct folder on the USB stick.
You could also temporarily install a USB wireless on the new XP machine and get the driver via the internet that way.

You need to go to a different computer, get all the device info and download xp drivers and/or install program for your rig, burn it to CD or whatever drive you have then install it.
Better yet, if you have a disk, use it.
You will likely still have issues with the dang thing, so if you are lucky enough to get on the net, go directly to windows update and load them all as directed.
Another option is to buy a wireless home network router and put it between your cable modem and your computer or just use the hard wired access points on the router. The XP software should see the router, after you set it up with the setup software.
That's my best advice. It's never good to hook directly to the cable modem. You need the firewall and the routers capabilities or the connection will be problematic in my experience.
Check yourself into rehab.

Modem driver and VGA driver
go to dell.com/downloads and support put in your model number (EXample dell sx260) and look for the driver in the network tab/box..download it through your browser and install...
The plug and play only works for the PCI slots. The Ethernet is built into the board as are the video and sound. I am typing on one that I upgraded a month ago and had to put a Ethernet card in it to get on the net so I could get the Compaq drivers for the board. They had them, and everything was up to date.
