Martial Arts Expert Fighting for Life After Being Stabbed By Burglars
Daily Record ^ | Jul 24 2010 | Mark Mcgivern

A MARTIAL arts expert was fighting for his life last night after he and his wife were stabbed in their home by intruders.

Johannes Alder, a five-time British champion in sombo wrestling, confronted two teenage burglars after they attacked his wife Liz, 38.

But, still half asleep, the brave 37-year-old was stabbed in the head and body before the thugs fled.

Medics at first listed him as critical, fearing he would die from his serious wounds. Liz also underwent surgery for a slashed wrist. Both were in a "serious but stable" condition last night. Blood could be seen on the door of the couple's home yesterday. Police branded the attack "appalling". Apprehend It is understood Johannes and Liz were asleep in their home in Saucelhill Terrace, Paisley, when the burglars struck. It is believed the teenage thieves were loading valuables from homes into a car parked nearby. Liz heard noises and went downstairs, catching them in the act. Johannes then tried to apprehend one of the youths before both turned their knives on him.

Neighbour William McGuire said: "We could hear shouting. I heard Liz shouting, 'Phone the police, phone the police'.

"She sounded frantic, really terrified, and I suspected that there were intruders in the house."

William, 61, added: "They are lovely neighbours. I know Johannes is into martial arts, but he would never be aggressive. He is a very decent, quiet guy." Johannes is an expert in sombo wrestling, a Russian martial art, which merges judo, ju-jitsu, karate and east European wrestling. He has an IT degree and worked for the police before moving to another job. He was recently made redundant. Liz runs a business with her sister Angela, selling children's clothes. The couple married in 2008. Police said the attack happened in the middle of a spree of thefts in the area.

Superintendent Niven Rennie said: "This is an appalling attack on a couple within their own home. Clearly, our thoughts are with them at this time. I would appeal for anyone who has information to contact us."

Police said the suspects were between 17 and 19. One was 5ft 10in, with short, blond spiky hair.

The second was of similar build and both wore dark clothing.

Penn & Teller did a show on martial arts on their BullS*** series. They show that the best defense in an armed robbery is to give it up and that fleeing is better than fighting.

IIRC in Britain one can be arrested and charged for defending oneself.

The concept of “life threatening” is considered years later as 12 men decide your fate.

I believe that this applies to martial arts as well.

Yobs don't seem to care much, either way.

“Bringing a foot to knife fight is never as good as bringing a .45.” or mounted quad .50s...

As someone who has studied Tae Kwon Do for 45+ years, I have seen what you are talking about, but it is not entirely true, while many dojo do concentrate in those areas because of the sports aspect of the particular discipline, the entire range of the art is taught. Now if you are looking for an art with no emphasis on competition and a concentration on self defense, I suggest Chon-Tu Kwan Hapkido otherwise known as Combat Hapkido. It was developed back in 1990 by Master John Pellegrini. It is particularly suited for someone who wants to learn to defend themselves, but does not want to dedicate their time to competing.

Hmm, I’ll remember this the next time an gun hater says that it’s better to use martial arts in self-defence.

I too have studies Tae Kwon Do. Learning martial arts is no guarantee that you won’t carry an ass whoopin. For me, it improved instincts and strikes. But doesn’t guarantee safety against everyone. There is always someone out there who is badder.

“Buying a gun” is a meaningless gesture. It’s like buying a stove for a person who does not know how to boil water. Since your husband already owns one, and you have access to it, learn to fight with it.

Many will suggest courses that take several days at places like Front Site, Thunder Ranch, etc. These are excellent if you have the time and the money, but if you don’t, find some local teachers that will give you a few hours and teach you how to use deadly force.

True, but I haven't met them yet, at least not in the last 20 yrs. Nevertheless, I still carry a .45 and a knife. Something about always being prepared.

I’ve taken judo and sombo. And I’ve worked as a policeman for nearly 25 years. Both judo and sombo are brutal. And they are excellent for police work. I’ve suffered broken bones, had a knee reconstructed from training ‘mishaps.’

Two people that come to mind quickly that practice sombo are Fedor and Gokor. I took sombo from one of Gokor’s students.

There was no pulling punches, we put on protective gear and it was full tilt. Go to a sombo or judo tournament.

Having said that, all of my instructors taught me that if you go up against someone with a knife, you are very likely going to get cut. Going up against two people, when you probably didn’t even know they had knives, your in trouble.

There is a Philipino gentleman in this area who teaches knife fighting. From the first day in his class you use real knives. He is capable of disarming someone with a knife. I also trained with a Vietnam Veteran, who’s last name was Marcinko who studied the same Philipino knife fighting. He had the whole class, one at a time, come at him with rubber knives. He not only disarmed me when I tried a thrust to his chest, he used an arm lock to force me to stab myself, he did it to everybody in the class.

But, he knew we all had knives, and it was one on one. Multiple attackers with knives? And you didn’t know they had knives? Your in deep.

I thought Britain banned knives?? hahaha.

I hope this man survives.

But still, the thieves were wearing black. Unless you have a pair of night vision or infrared goggles, you’re not going to be able to pop a guy wearing black in the middle of the night. The poor fellow was screwed from the start.

Not to mention too, if you do something stupid with your gun like hold it right up to the perp’s face and he’s martially trained, you’ll be without a gun and you won’t have MA training. Train in both for maximum efficiency. Guns aren’t magic wands.

“Unless you have a pair of night vision or infrared goggles, you’re not going to be able to pop a guy wearing black in the middle of the night.”

Good point. Black clothes make you invisible at night!

Nope, if he could see them to grapple with them, he could see them to shoot them. That is just silly. Lots of thieves wearing black have been shot dead by folks defending their home.

Riddle me this - can a black dog be seen at night?

When I raise a gun, it IS to shoot. Not to threaten. Not to hold it there. If he is within 6 feet, I’ll shoot without raising the gun - no need. Then I’ll move and try for another shot at another angle.

Some reality: According to the FBI, you can blow a man’s heart out with a 44 magnum, and - if he is determined - he will still have 10-20 seconds of useful consciousness left. If he chooses to use that to shoot, stab, or punch, that is HIS option and you don’t get a vote. At best, you limit how long he can do so.

You are correct there - guns are NOT magic wands and they are not defensive in nature. They allow a weak person to deliver a killing blow, but no handgun caliber is capable of stopping a man in his tracks without a difficult brain shot.

That isn’t true for high powered rifles. If you get the bullet moving at 2500 fps or better, the ball game changes. But no handgun does that...

I will agree that if you do some Judo tachiwaza quickly and don’t enter newaza that it could be better for multiple opponents than something that focuses on ground game.

Those of you saying that martial arts are dumb because Penn and Teller said so etc. etc. check out Muay Thai:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ-KL6-TVEE&feature=related

There’s no pulling punches there. And BTW I’ve seen the Penn and Teller episode, and, as usual, they just find the nutcases and showcase them. They showed some McDojo bullshido and a crazy woman, never went to an MMA gym or anywhere that taught, trained, and competed in full contact martial arts.

If someone grabs you or your purse, immediately grab their hair or ear and with the other hand punch them in the Adams Apple, nose or use your thumb and stab them in the Adams Apple or eye. A knee to the groin, an elbow to the ribs, stomp on their foot with your heel.

Very few attackers expect the victim to fight back. An immediate response stuns them. Don’t stay and fight run. Get some distance between you. Look for anything you can use as a weapon. A chair, ashtray, glass jar of whatever, if there’s other people nearby, scream for help.

An expired credit card that has been sharpened will cut skin just as easy as a knife will. Take a nail file and shave the end at a 45 degree angle.

There is a risk that some of this will be detrimental to true self defense.

For a lot of folks, these are just aerobics classes without the spandex. Someone that's never had their nose bloodied is often at a loss when it happens for the first time.
