...and thanks to some great work by Dr. Alan Whanger (professor emeritus; Duke University), there is ample evidence that the earliest images/iconography were based on the face in the Shroud of Turin. Based on that face, here is the best representation of Him I've ever seen:

I remember that. His work was a kick in the pants to the popular misconception that the Shroud is a medieval forgery.

Another one was the Sudarium of Oviedo - the facecloth that went with the shroud. Its various marks and scratches and stains match up exactly with those on the Shroud - and its provenance is well attested as far back as 300 AD.
