One small quibble to the otherwise on point article. The earliest known images of Jesus date back to circa 300 AD. Before that articles such as the Christian Fish were used as representative imagery. There is some early variety such as Jesus being clean-shaven, but generally they seemed to have an idea of what they thought Jesus should have looked like. The "accepted" Jesus developed in a relatively short space of time and isn't much different then how he was later painted by Leonardo and the rest.
