Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
You can never go wrong with a shotgun.

Make that the best shotgun you can afford. Start with an 870 Remington and upwards through an 1100 Remington, Beneli Super90 and so on. Better the shotgun the more likely you are to put shots on target when needed.
Next, get ammunition and PRACTICE.

I guess that depends on where you live. I just ordered a prison riot gun, 870 3” mag. Shotgun is good for bear and smaller varmint. Pistol is good for close quarters. Rifle for longer range critters.

Start with a pistol that you would be willing to wear during every hour you are awake, including while working outdoors and at rest in your home.

Easy, either an AR-15 or an AK-47.
There is a reason that the US military uses and M-16 (AR-15), its been battle proved for 40 years. Same with an AK-47, it has been used in every war for the last 50 years. Get either one, or both with a few thousand rounds of ammo each and you will be good to go.
