They shut the trolleys down for a while, starting in 82, to rehab them. I was living in Oakland then and actually bought a ticket to ride it on the last day, rather than my normal practice of jumping on without one, then getting back off when the conductor was headed my way. I was a much worse scofflaw then than I am now.

And highly individual.

They shut them down once before in the mid-70’s, but I think it was “loss of revenue.”

At any rate, we were long gone when they started up again.

Probably from scofflaws like me, riding without paying.

The cable cars were running last time I was there, 1974 or 1975. And the BART had recently opened then.

One of my college friends worked in SF for a while, and she said it had the best fabric stores she’d ever seen outside India.

Or maintenance? I don’t remember.

LOL!

Not sayin’! I think I’d have done the same thing had they been running while I was there!

Sigh. Went from a gray cloudy day to bright sun, and I am holed up again.

We rode the BART to the ballet when The Nutcracker was playing. The kids rode the BART on field trips with thier classes. But the cable cars were in the barns.

Which is sad because they missed out on a fun trip. Or trips.

We were staying with friends in Oakland or Fullerton or something like that. A reasonable distance to spend a day in SF. It was winter; might have been 1973.

It’s about 105 outside and the humidity is up a little...in the double digits.

*sigh*

I don’t know where my smoking neighbor is except that I don’t need extra lungs to breathe today. She can go away for the duration for all I care. Her smoking is costing me a fortune in eyedrops, surgical masks, candles, and A/C, because I can’t close all my windows.

Part of my letter to the *kof-kof* RJ is composed, but as leftist as the RJ is, I doubt I will be heard, even on the editorial page.

The cable cars were fun, I admit. But BART north of SFO airport today is SO loud I've thought of call OSHA, or EPA, or whomever. When it hurts your ears it's not good.

Touring Alcatraz was interesting, as well as the sub parked near the Alcatraz ferry.

But the only reason I'd go there today would be to drop in and have a chat with the archbishop.

Not sure what it’s doing here but the light breeze coming in the window feels a little cool.

When my brother and sister-in-law came out mid-70’s to check out the area (company transfer) the trolleys weren’t running, but the BART was. We toured Alcatraz (as far as they would let us at the time. Seems Marlon and the Indians were not too long vacated.)

We went to Lazio’s on Fisherman’s Wharf (related to my cousins in San Diego) and because I’m not a fish-eater, I settled for a hamburger. My sister-in-law wanted to try calimari because it sounded musical to her ears. Then she was told what it was.

I don’t think I’d go back to the Bay Area for a lot of reasons. I spent many hours going to and from SFO, taking Igor or dropping him off, and I hated it then. I can’t imagine doing it now.

I wish the light breeze coming in my window felt a little cool.

I love summer and the heat. But that’s when I could leave early in the morning and be done with my errands before the heat set in.

Now, I just wish Miss Daisy had a little fire...

You’d have to work hard to get me to move back down there.

No one has to work hard to get me to move out of here. It’s a losing battle. I’ve seen most of the country (lived in most of it for 3-60 months) and this is where I want to be. Hot and dry. ;o]

Just got an e-mail from my father with a bunch of Blue Angels photos. My favorite includes the USS Constitution.

OTOH, here's a view of Alcatraz you won't see often.
