They shut them down once before in the mid-70’s, but I think it was “loss of revenue.” Probably from scofflaws like me, riding without paying.

The cable cars were running last time I was there, 1974 or 1975. And the BART had recently opened then.
One of my college friends worked in SF for a while, and she said it had the best fabric stores she’d ever seen outside India.
