Leopard and golden retriever who are best of friends.

Spot the difference: The leopard and the golden retriever who are the best of friends

It's a role reversal not commonly seen, but then the cat chasing this dog is a little larger than most.

Salati, a ten-month-old leopard, and her best friend, golden retriever Tommy, like nothing more than to run amok before settling down for a friendly cuddle.

The odd couple were reared together at Glen Afric Country Lodge near Pretoria in South Africa.

The cat is just putting its scent on the dog. Its now his property...but they sure are beautiful animals...

There are a lot of interesting friendships between animals as a result of human intervention, but the strangest one I saw was in the wilderness in Yukon in a video. A young Arctic wolf was playing “tag, you’re it!” with a young grizzly bear.

Leopards in the wild (Africa at least, probably the same case in India too) LOVE dogs! Absolutely adore dogs ....as in, the taste of dog meat. In areas where dogs are near an area with leopards in the wild the dogs tend to ‘take to the trees’ quite regularly. When this leopard is an adult I hope that the bond they formed lasts, otherwise the dog will be facing the most efficient killer in the African (and Indian) wild, a cat that is capable of dragging more than its weight straight up a tree, and a very intelligent and capable animal. The dog would have no chance! Actually, less than none.

>>a cat that is capable of dragging more than its weight straight up a tree<<

Precisely. I’ve seen documentaries where an antelope is taken up a tree and devoured. Efficient killing machines those leopards.

What a happy household full of critters.

We had a cat who so bonded with the dog that they were inseparable buddies. When the dog was away, the cat curled up in the dog’s empty food bowl, knowing that was the first place the dog checked when she came into the house after being out on an adventure.

Good memories. Thanks p08!

A Rhodesian Ridgeback would have a chance.

A pack of Ridgebacks ...yes. They were used for hunting lions, where the dogs would be used to harrass it long enough for the person to shoot the lion. Amazing dogs, and very nice. I know a person who breeds them in Kenya. HOWEVER, one on one, the Ridgeback still wouldn’t have a chance against an adult leopard. The cat is too fast, too well armed (I once saw what a swipe of a leopard’s claws can do to a dog ...suffice it to say Freddy Kruger would get a hardon), and also too powerful. Sure, the dog looks bigger, but it is probably operating at a third of the strength of the leopard. There’s a person who had two large dobbermans who lost them both in less than ten seconds, literally, to a large male. One on one, less than zero chance. Always. Unless the leopard is sick or wounded or something. Great dog though ...arguably my favorite breed. I am surprised you mentioned it ....when I used to be in the US (7 years) I never once came across even the mention of the Ridgeback.

My wife is really into dogs so I hear about all of these breeds. She told me they used them to hunt lions and I was pretty amazed. They must be tough bleeping dogs if they hunt lions. Thanks for the info.
