I like the AK because it is just TOUGH!
That’s why we’re seeing more AP ammo over here.
And if a Level IV vest is part of the equation, then the M16 doesn’t do much good either.
I’m packing a 7.62mm AKSU. It’s great for the work we do. Wouldn’t mind having my M16 back, but would really prefer that old M14.
Bottom line: I have never, ever had a single misfire, jam or failure to feed in any AK, good or bad. I have rarely ever had a problem with an AR. Both are good. If I were in a sandstorm or a torrential downpour, give me the AK.
Love that rifle. Every one I have ever had ran like a Swiss watch and never missed a beat. And no matter what anyone tells you, a FAL can be made into a sub MOA rifle. The biggest challenge is to get an accurate barrel and to reduce the trigger pull. I solved the barrel dilemma by making my own from good quality blanks and from Remington 700 take offs.
Yup, and here:

“#9: Mosin-Nagant M44
Speaking of guns without safeties, here’s the Mosin-Nagant M44 Carbine from Russia. The Mosin was used by the Russians against the Finns, the Finns against the Russians, the Estonians against the Russians, the Russians against the Russians, and the Russians against the Germans. It does, in fact, have a safety, but it’s quite hard to engage. But this is not a complaint one would ever voice in the Red Army. Your officer would reply, “Safety? Safety? Is gun! Meant to kill! No warrior should know he has safety on gun, because he should be killing enemies of homeland! Safety make loud click to aid enemy in locating warriors! No safety!” while pounding his fist on the table.
And the Mosin can kill enemies of homeland. The muzzle blast will vaporize green growth within a few feet of the muzzle, and even if you miss, the enemy will be reduced to shouting “WHAT?” to communicate. You’ll need a recoil pad or shooting jacket. Ordinarily, this might be considered unmanly, but this rifle has a short stock for using while wearing several layers of wool for a Russian winter. It is acceptable to wear padding to fire a Mosin.
Of course, there are also M38, 91/30 and other variations of Mosin-Nagant and all are cool. All, also (except the M38), come with a bayonet. Russian doctrine held that the bayonet was mounted except while traveling in a vehicle, because the Russians understood that an empty rifle could still be a pointy sticka Viking spear. The Russians loved to spear Turks. So, coincidentally, did the Vikings. This rifle sounds better all the time, doesn’t it? The Finns used the Mosin as a sniper rifle during the Winter War, and their greatest Sniper was Simo Häyhä, who had 500 confirmed kills in 100 days. This is a man the Finns describe as “modest” and “self-effacing.” It’s a good thing the Russians didn’t run into a Finn who was proud and arrogant. They’d have been wiped out.
It fires a 7.62X54R (for “Rimmed”) cartridge, about as powerful as .30-06, and holds the distinction of being in service from 1891 to the present, longer than any other military cartridge. It is still used in Dragunovs, PKMs and other Russian weapons. It’s cheap in quantity. So are the rifles, because they were built for (all variations) over 70 years, by Russia, Finland, Poland, Romania, even the US. As I write this, arsenal-new M44s are $55 to $200. At that price, you should have several, so any guests you have during the Collapse can be outfitted as they receive Enlightenment. Then they can rape, kill, sack and loot with the rest of the men who secure a new Dark Ages to hasten the new renaissance. It will be a manly duty.”
What price would be your “no go” price on the BH Mk 262 ammo?
Vest? You’re going for a body shot? He** no!, you go for the head.
I made this decision the summer before the Marxist got elected. I got a “converted” Russian Saiga rifle from classicarms.us for about $500 bucks.
Basically I got the AK vs AR since it was:
- cheaper than AR
- russian ammo cheaper than .223
- weapon will fire when dirty and without good lubrication. maintenance less than AR
- ultra reliable because of loser tolerances
- did not see the need for > 200m range in a suburban environment. AR is more accurate especially at 200m+
- 7.62X39 has more penetration(brick, cinder block, metal, wood) and is more deadly ammo than .223
- readily available 40 round magazines
- can take more abuse and rough handling
BTW — all the “white box” BH Mk262 ammo I’ve seen is marked as “seconds” - ie, it failed the DOD’s contract specs in some way.
I’ve never seen non-”second” ammo in the BH Mk262 spec for sale.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I’ll get at least one just to see the muzzle flash.
And in response to that, let’s link in this recent worthwhile thread:

Mostly an ACOG vs. EOTech comparison, with lots of other good commentary.
>>It is acceptable to wear padding to fire a Mosin.
Worth saying again.
;-P
I found a good deal on a batch of BH 77gr SMK blue-box, and went for that. Cheaper and easier to get, and the advantages of the Mk 262 aren't worth the expense. I'm tuning my rifle to this load and will go with that, unless performance doesn't meet expectations.
Reloading is also an option I will be looking into.
M-1 Garand
I have one ar15 in 5.56 & another in 6.8 spc. Very accurate and good take down power. I would go for the ar15 in either caliber but my 6.8 is better.
Don't mix up trauma plates and ceramic armor plates. Trauma plates are worn behind soft armor to minimize the deflection of the soft armor into your chest cavity while the soft armor is stopping the penetration of a bullet. Basically it spreads the impact energy over a wider area. The impact energy, without a trauma plate, can even stop a heart. But a trauma plate, alone, won't stop any bullet. Armor plates are worn outside of soft armor, and are typically 8X11 inches, covering most of the "vitals." They will stop most military rifle calibers fired point blank. Many soldiers owe their lives to these armor plates.
The latest and greatest version of the M16 is the M16A5 “Designated Marksmen Rifle.” It looks like an A4, but it has a better barrel, better trigger, and an ACOG 4x sight on the flat top.
Snipers are reporting first round kills at 800 yards when firing the 77 grain Black Hills ammo.
Doesn’t get much better than that.
BTW, tricked out AR-15s in 5.56mm have been cleaning up the thousand yard competitions for years now.
Foolish comment. Do you want a rifle that has an effective range of under 300 yards, in a fight against rifles with effective ranges of 600 to 800 yards? That is called the dead zone, if you have the short range rifle. BTW, our snipers are getting first round KILLS at 800 yards with the 77 grain Black Hills ammo. That's more than an annoyance for a dead Taliban with an AK who needs to walk in 500 more yards just to get in range of the M-16.
