The significance is that umps don't usually do that. They tell you in school, don't admit to the miss. But this was a veteran ump stepping up and admitting it.

The game has gone this long without changing the oputcome of a game on a judgement call. Can only do it on the awarded protest of a misinterpretation of the rules.

ESPNews covering the game extensively.

I agree. It’s not like the umpire wanted to miss the call. He probably feels pretty crappy right now.

If there’s any justice in this world, Galarraga will be awarded his perfect game. Joyce has already admitted he blew the call. Jason Donald knew clearly that he was out, and if he has any class (I have no reason whatsoever to think he doesn’t) he too will do his part in turning his hit into the groundout it was.

There’s really no reason MLB can’t fix this. It’s actually an incredibly clear-cut situation - the outcome of the game is totally irrelevant as the next batter was retired.

He was on the phone with ESPN in the Reds-Cards game. He handled it better than the jerk who cussed me out here.

An absolute travesty. A real bone headed call.

He probably likes the controversy.

If I read the schedule correctly, they’ll be there again tomorrow afternoon.

Can MLB also reverse the wrong safe call for Damon when he was clearly out in the 8th inning? That call cost the Indians 2 runs. The game should have still been 1-0 going into the 9th. Replay the whole 9th inning then.

Hose Job! That ump has to be hating life about now. I hear they are hiring at 7-11.

The outcome of the game isn’t in question here. The matter is quite simple. Joyce has admitted he was wrong, which is obvious to everybody. Cabrera, Galarraga, Donald, and whoever the Indians first base coach is all knew Donald was out. I am quite certain Donald would accept the 3-1 groundout in place of his “hit.” It’s a simple matter - change Donald’s single to a 3-1 groundout and remove Crowe’s last at-bat. (This is done all the time in postponed games that end before they are official.)

It’s a simple matter. The Tigers won anyway. Just fix the call and give Galarraga the perfect game he earned. You’re not even changing the final score, much less the outcome. Scorers change hits and errors all the time after the game. This is really not that big of a deal to do.

Funny thing is that this will overshadow the other perfect games pitched in the last couple of weeks due to the controversey alone.

You are being logical and I am describing the way the game is and the way it has been.

If the commissioner changes the way the game was played on the field, he'll burn in hell at the hands of millions of those who love the game the way it is. Nothing is more traditional than baseball.

Damn right!

I even flipped from the Cards game **gasp** to watch history and see some jerk ump blow the call!

As a Cards fan I’m pissed and can imagine how the Tigers and their fans feel.

The Tigers were my g-dad’s team and if I had a second team to root for it would be them - except when playing my Cards of course. ;-`)

Weird they broke into coverage of the Flyers/Blackhawks Game to show the last out of the Phillies perfect game last week. Flyers and Blackhawks playing again tonight.

The view from the other side showed a bit of a bobble by the pitcher. Maybe that’s why he was called safe.

Perhaps I’m just a simple engineer, but if it’s broken then you should fix it.

very well stated flint. there is NO REASON mlb could not do as you suggest....other than the fact they ‘cover’ for their umps as bad as the state run media covers for muslim BOY hussein.

So you’re proposing the game should be devoid of human error? You need to bring in the machines and good luck with that. It’s not engineering, it’s baseball.
