A crop circle measuring some 300 feet diameter has appeared in a field of oil seed rape near Wilton Windmill in Wiltshire, England.
The pattern of dashes and spaces against each of the lines coming out of the centre forms the binary code for symbols and letters of the alphabet which feature in Eulers Identity, a complex formula devised by the 18th Century Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler.
Lucy Pringle, crop circle researcher and author says: I believe it contains binary. Working from the centre outwards, people are suggesting it has a connection to Leonhard Eulers theorem e^(i)pi+1=0 which is thought to be one of the most beautiful theorems in mathematics. Historically over the years, crop circles have been associated with diatonic scales (white notes on the piano). These diatonic scale frequencies are encoded in each segment of the crop circle and can be played on the piano. This is a unique formation incorporating both music and mathematics and is similar in importance to the famous 2008 Barbury Castle Pi event.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo.....Prettyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..........................
Thanks anyway, but I’ll wait until they arrange it for guitar.
Bummer, PI Day is already over.
Somebody planted a whole field of rape?
My cousin once had a goat that ate in geometric patterns. He died from a ruptured stomach while eating in a mobius strip pattern on a wheat field.
In that theorum, is “i” the square root of -1 ?
You’re welcome.
What has happened in this particular crop circle is that there are 12 segments and within each segment there are 8 partly concentric rings. Each of these segments indicates a binary code based on 0 and 1. If you use an Ascii Table [computer calculation system], the pattern transposes itself into a tantalising approximation of Eulers equation.
Dr John Talbot, a maths research fellow at University College London said: Looking at the crop circle, the link with Eulers most famous identity seems to make perfect sense. However, the way the formula has been executed is partially incorrect. One of the discrepancies is that one part of the formula translates as hi rather than i, which could be somebodys idea of a joke.
Looks like somebody’s running a defrag on the field.
There is a nice explanation and animation at the link.

“e” is the base of natural logarithms. “i” is the square root of negative one.
The formula is obtained by taking x=pi in the Euler equation
e^(ix) = cos(x) + i * sin(x).
Our local crop circle group, the “Piltdown Men” once included the binaries for the formation’s latitude and longitude in one of their circles.
Local media and ufo enthusiasts failed to pick up on that and had to be clued to it with an anonymous telephone call.
It is just Euler’s formula e^(ix) = cos x + i sin x when x=pi. Euler’s formula is used to define circles on a plane with a real axis and an imaginary axis.
As far as I can tell, it says that e raised to the power ( i times pi), added to 1, is 0.
Also, as far as I know, e is a number such that the natural logarithm of e is 1; pi is of course the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and i is an imaginary number such that i squared is equal to -1.
But I’m having trouble working it out. I’d like to see a proof of this theorum,; preferrabley one which is NOT made from whole grain.
