It is just Euler’s formula e^(ix) = cos x + i sin x when x=pi. Euler’s formula is used to define circles on a plane with a real axis and an imaginary axis.

I believe Ferris wrote this formula on his day off. What? It’s EULER? Sorry. Never mind.
