Vanity- Looking for a TV series on DVD to begin watching. Any suggestions?
5/24/10 | Alienand stranger

I don’t watch TV, but I own a few series on DVD that I watch in order to avoid commercials and to watch on my own time.

I’m looking for something that doesn’t insult my spiritual or political (Christian Conservative) beliefs. And I don’t want comedies that exist on juvenile sexual innuendoes.

I love and own the first five seasons of LOST and THE OFFICE. I have the first two seasons of 24, but quit when I saw that the producers are too cowardly to depict Muslim terrorists not backed by white corporate types as the bad guys. I also have BAND OF BROTHERS and the first 10 seasons of THE SIMPSONS.

I was thinking of getting the first season of SCRUBS except I’m uncomfortable watching with my 16 year old daughter because of the frequent sexual situations.

I heard good things about CHUCK.

Any suggestions for a series I can get into?

If you like SF, the first season of Space:1999 was great, although the second did dissolve into kitsch a bit:

And U.F.O. was absoulutely fantastic (if you can overlook the plethora of Nehru collars):

I’d recommend Blakes 7, but it’s inexplicably unavailable in this country.

Are they any worse than 24? Jack gutted a guy like a fish about two hours ago ... after thumping on his kidneys for a while, ripping off a piece of flesh with pliers, and blowtorching him.

Actually, the Shield is WAY worse than 24. The Shield is like a cop drama on steroids while smoking crack. To give you an idea of some of the stuff that goes on, there are scenes such as a cop fighting with a bad guy in a kitchen, where the cop gets his faced forcefully cooked on the stove top (and yes they show it fully, as I recall). There is also a scene where another cop gets orally raped (yes you read that correctly) at gunpoint. You don't see the whole thing; they cut away to a watching bad guy's face as you hear the rape occur. Nasty stuff. The Wire is actually a little more tame than the Shield (but not without its own brutality), but it focuses a lot more on actual police work such as stakeouts, wiretaps, court orders, etc.

“Carol Burnett” is available via infomercial. The ad for it has one of the funniest episodes — a spoof of Gone With the Wind. The scene where Scarlett (Carol Burnett) comes down the stairs in a gown made out of drapes (complete with the curtain rod) is hysterical.

Rhett (Harvey Korman): That gown is gorgeous.
Scarlett: Thank you. I saw it in a window and I couldn’t resist it.

They don’t make comedy like that anymore.

Catherine Bell.

Katherine Ross was in The Graduate and Butch Cassidy.

I’ll just jump in and say “as time goes by” a BBC series my wife and I love.

If you like that, I think you'll like A Fine Romance.

LOL! Sounds like playing ‘hi bob’ back in the day. Maybe I’ll follow your advice on this. We used to refer to Deadwood as the “C***S*****” show.

We watch both as time goes by and a fine romance - though I get somewhat uncomfortable with the awkwardness of the setups in a fine romance. Dame Judi is excellent in both...

Many of these have been mentioned.

NCIS. Mark Harmon as SA Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Gunny USMC, ret.)
Babylon 5. SciFi, but a very well done 5 year story arc. You have to pay attention.
Stargate SG-1.
Any of the older classics. Dick Van Dyke, I love Lucy, Mary Tyler Moore.... You know the ones.
The Unit.

I Spy was good, and is ridiculously cheap right now:

And American television just does not get much better than Columbo:
